Position Summary: The Operating Room Registered Nurse oversees the safe, effective, and efficient care of patients in the operating room by sterilizing equipment, preparing rooms, and assessing patients before and after surgery. They will also assist the surgeon during the procedure. The operating room nurse should be a strong communicator with a friendly personality and have the ability and physical stamina to provide a high level of care under pressure.

Position Requirements

Education: Graduate of an accredited school/college of nursing required. Bachelors preferred.

Licensure: Registered Nursing licensed in the State of Nebraska or eligible compact state required.

Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification (ACLS) required within 90 days of hire or transfer date.

Experience: 1+ years perioperative, medical-surgical or PACU experience preferred.


Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age /weight of the patients served.
  • Performs technical skills competently and independently to assure patient safety.
  • In-depth knowledge of surgical operation procedures
  • Highly skilled at assessing patients prior to surgery and providing them with perioperative care
  • Extensive knowledge of aseptic and sterile techniques
  • Ability to collaborate with surgeons and other healthcare professionals
  • Solid understanding of patient health and safety standards
  • Excellent organizational skills

Essential Job Functions

  • Performs an initial and ongoing assessment to determine the assigned patient's ongoing nursing care needs.
  • Develops/reviews/revises and individualizes the plan of care to address the patient's nursing care needs for optimum patient care outcome.
  • Implements interventions consistent with the established plan of care in a safe and appropriate manner.
  • Evaluates patient care to determine response to care/interventions for optimal patient outcome.
  • Maintains a professional behavior in attitudes, demeanor, interactions to achieve organization's mission.
  • Initiates action to correct, prevent, and/or minimize risk(s) to the patient, family or hospital employees (i.e., falls, needle sticks, patient concerns).
  • Comply with safety activities, policies and procedures and regulatory requirements such as OSHA and The Joint Commission.
  • Participate in performance improvement activities.
  • Attend and participate in department meetings.
  • Attend mandatory educational programs.
  • Follow established guidelines as stated in hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for all other duties as assigned.

Physical requirements: This position is classified as Medium Work in the Dictionary of Occupational Titles, requiring the exertion of 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.



Must be able to pass background check. We also conduct pre-employment physical and drug testing. Any job offer will be contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment physical with a drug screen, background check and obtaining active licensures per job requirements.
