About Us: The City of Oneonta is dedicated to providing exceptional services to our community. Our Public Works Department plays a vital role in maintaining the city's infrastructure. We are currently seeking a diligent and skilled Public Works Maintenance Worker to join our team and contribute to the upkeep and improvement of our city's facilities, including animal control responsibilities.

Job Description: As a Public Works Maintenance Worker, you will be responsible for performing a variety of maintenance and repair tasks related to public infrastructure, including streets, parks, municipal buildings, animal control, and operating heavy machinery. The ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and a commitment to public service.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine maintenance and repair tasks on city streets, sidewalks, parks, and public buildings.
  • Operate and maintain various tools and equipment, including power tools, mowers, and light construction equipment.
  • Drive and operate a brush truck and other heavy machinery.
  • Conduct inspections of public facilities and report any issues or needed repairs.
  • Participate in landscaping and groundskeeping duties, including mowing, trimming, and planting.
  • Respond to emergency calls for service and assist in emergency response activities, such as snow removal and storm cleanup.
  • Carry out animal control duties, including capturing and safely handling stray or lost animals, and transporting them to the appropriate facilities.
  • Follow safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Collaborate with team members and other city departments to complete projects efficiently.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL); the city will provide CDL classes and cover associated costs.
  • Previous experience in public works, maintenance, construction, animal control, or a related field is preferred.
  • Ability to operate and maintain various tools and equipment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Physical ability to perform manual labor, including lifting, bending, and working in various weather conditions.
