District Sign Tech I:

Performs entry-level transportation related work installing, repairing, and maintaining traffic signs, mailboxes, and delineators in a district. Work includes maintaining inventory and records of signs and materials and using specialized tools and equipment related to sign installation. Employees at this level perform assignments following specific instructions and standard practices and are subject to frequent review by the immediate supervisor.

District Sign Tech II: 

Performs skilled transportation related work installing, repairing, and maintaining traffic signs, mailboxes, and delineators
in a district. Work includes maintaining inventory and records, ordering of signs and materials, and using specialized tools
and equipment related to sign installation. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent
supervision of details. 

Essential Duties:

District Sign Tech I: 

  • Issues signs to maintenance sections/transportation crews; uses tools and equipment and moves signs and related materials
  • Moves equipment, tools, materials, and products
  • Operates radios
  • Performs and maintains inventory of signs
  • Performs preventative maintenance on sign truck
  • Repairs and installs signs, supports, foundations and delineators in accordance with Manual on Uniform Traffic Control
  • Devices (MUTCD) and other department guidance
  • Assists transportation maintenance crews with maintenance related work as requires; may respond to assist with emergency situations/conditions
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned


District Sign Technician II:
The above and:

  • Orders supplies and materials from district shop
  • Conducts nighttime luminaire inspections to ensure reflectivity of signs, delineators, stripping, and retroreflective pavement markers (RPMs)
  • Inspects roadways to identify sign and delineator deficiencies and recommend repairs
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned


Minimum Qualifications:

Education: District Sign Tech I-II: No experience or education required.

Experience: 

District Sign Tech I: None (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part time equivalent)

District Sign II: 1 year sign installation and/or repair, roadway maintenance, construction, transportation engineering
 support, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part
 time equivalent)

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have obtained a Class "A" CDL, within 180 calendar days from date of employment.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Climbing- ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc.
  • Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to rest on knee(s)
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
