Overview of HopeHealth 

HopeHealth provides integrated health services for more than 50,000 patients in areas surrounding Aiken, Clarendon, Florence, Orangeburg, and Williamsburg counties. It was founded in 1991 as a grassroots HIV/AIDS support organization and was designated as a Federally Qualified Health Center in 2007 to expand its services to include primary and pediatric care. HopeHealth now has over 100 providers covering primary care, dental care, chiropractic care, rheumatology, endocrinology, behavioral health and psychiatry, pain management, substance use treatment, and women’s health services. 

Overview of the Position

The Specialty Pharmacy Technician supports patients receiving specialty medications by coordinating medication access, prior authorizations, financial assistance, refill management, and ongoing patient support. Working within HopeHealth's integrated care model, the technician collaborates with pharmacists, providers, specialty clinics, case managers, and payers to ensure timely access to therapy, improve adherence, and enhance patient outcomes while maintaining compliance with ACHC, URAC, 340B, and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. 
  • Current Pharmacy Technician registration/licensure as required by state law. 
  • National Pharmacy Technician Certification (PTCB or ExCPT) preferred. 
  • One year of pharmacy technician experience required; specialty pharmacy experience preferred.
  • Experience with prior authorizations, insurance billing, and patient assistance programs preferred. 
  • Strong communication, customer service, organizational, and documentation skills.
  • Experience working in an FQHC, ambulatory care, HIV, Hepatitis C, or specialty pharmacy setting preferred.

Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of specialty pharmacy operations and insurance processes. 
  •  Strong communication and customer service skills.
  •  Excellent organization and attention to detail. 
  •  Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  •  Proficiency with pharmacy systems and electronic health records. 
  • Understanding of HIPAA, 340B, ACHC, and URAC requirements

Patient Support & Care Coordination 

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for specialty pharmacy patients. 
  • Coordinate new patient onboarding and therapy initiation. 
  • Conduct refill coordination and adherence outreach. 
  • Identify and escalate barriers to therapy, including cost, access, side effects, and adherence concerns.
  •  Document all patient interactions accurately and timely. 
  • Coordinate medication delivery and shipment scheduling.

Medication Access & Financial Assistance

  • Perform benefit investigations and insurance verification. 
  • Submit and monitor prior authorizations, appeals, and renewals.
  • Resolve insurance claim issues and coverage delays. 
  • Enroll eligible patients in copay assistance, manufacturer assistance, and foundation programs.
  • Educate patients regarding medication costs and available financial resources

Provider & Specialty Clinic Collaboration

  • Communicate with providers, nurses, case managers, and specialty clinic staff regarding medication access and therapy status. 
  • Obtain required documentation, including chart notes, labs, and diagnosis information. 
  • Provide updates on authorization status, therapy delays, and patient needs. 
  • Support integrated care coordination across specialty service lines.

HIV, Hepatitis C & Specialty Disease State Support 

  • Support patients receiving HIV, Hepatitis C, and other specialty therapies.
  • Assist with Ryan White program coordination and applicable patient assistance programs. 
  • Monitor adherence and continuity of care for specialty patients.
  •  Collaborate with pharmacists and care teams to support treatment goals and retention in care.

Patient Management & Care Planning 

  • Support pharmacist-led patient management programs and individualized care plans. 
  • Assist with patient reassessments, follow-up activities, and care plan documentation. 
  • Communicate adherence concerns, therapy interruptions, and clinical issues to pharmacists and care teams. 
  • Contribute to patient outcome and quality improvement initiatives.

Compliance & Operations 

  • Track prescriptions from intake through dispensing and refill management. 
  • Maintain organized workflow queues and prioritize urgent therapies.
  • Support specialty medication handling and cold-chain requirements when applicable.
  • Assist with 340B program compliance and documentation requirements.
  • Maintain compliance with HIPAA, ACHC, URAC, state, and federal regulations. 
  • Participate in quality improvement, accreditation, audit, and compliance activities.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift 30 pounds. Vision and hearing corrected to within normal limits is required. Must have manual dexterity to key in data; utilize computer, grab, grip, hold, tear, cut, sort, and reach.
