Laboratory Assistant III – ORMC Core Laboratory

2nd Shift

We are seeking a detail-oriented and customer-focused Laboratory Assistant III to join the ORMC Core Laboratory team. Position Summary

The Laboratory Assistant III performs specimen receiving and processing duties, patient registration, order entry, specimen centrifugation, labeling and aliquoting samples, test-site distribution, sample storage, and other laboratory support functions. This role also serves as a key liaison between the laboratory, nursing staff, physicians, patients, and external clients to ensure exceptional service and quality patient care.

✅ Key Responsibilities

  • Process and receive laboratory specimens accurately and efficiently
  • Register patients and enter physician orders into laboratory systems
  • Perform specimen centrifugation, labeling, aliquoting, storage, and distribution
  • Demonstrate knowledge of specimen collection and handling requirements
  • Provide exceptional customer service and resolve patient or client concerns
  • Support billing, reference testing, scheduling, and laboratory workflows
  • Train staff and assist with workflow coordination as needed
  • Act as a liaison between laboratory personnel, physicians, nursing teams, and external clients
  • Order and maintain inventory of laboratory supplies
  • Process pathology specimens and coordinate courier pickups
  • Document specimen quality issues and maintain records
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives
  • Maintain compliance with Orlando Health policies, infection prevention practices, and confidentiality standards
  • Assist with report distribution, filing, and requisition management
  • May perform phlebotomy and IV starts when appropriately trained and competency-approved

Qualifications

Required:

✔ High School Diploma or GED equivalent

✔ Three (3) years of laboratory, patient care, or patient business experience

✔ Strong customer service, communication, and organizational skills

✔ Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced healthcare environment

✔ Ability to maintain accuracy, confidentiality, and attention to detail

Preferred:

⭐ Experience working in a hospital or clinical laboratory setting

⭐ Familiarity with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and hospital computer systems

⭐ Phlebotomy and/or IV start experience with approved competencies
