Description

HVAC Service Technician

The HVAC Service Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. This role involves diagnosing system issues, performing preventive maintenance, and ensuring that HVAC systems operate efficiently and in accordance with safety and industry standards. The technician must possess strong technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.


Key Responsibilities

1. Installation of HVAC Systems

  • Install new heating, cooling, and ventilation systems, including air conditioners, furnaces, heat pumps, refrigeration units, ductwork, and thermostats.
  • Ensure that all HVAC systems are installed in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and manufacturer specifications.
  • Test installed equipment for proper functionality and troubleshoot any initial issues.

2. System Maintenance

  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on HVAC systems to ensure optimal performance.
  • Clean, adjust, and repair systems to ensure they are operating efficiently.
  • Check and replace filters, belts, fans, and other system components as needed.
  • Perform inspections on heating, cooling, and ventilation systems to identify potential problems.

3. Diagnostics and Repairs

  • Diagnose malfunctioning HVAC systems to identify the cause of the problem.
  • Use diagnostic tools and methods to troubleshoot issues related to electrical wiring, motors, compressors, refrigerants, and other system components.
  • Repair or replace defective or worn-out components and parts to restore system functionality.
  • Calibrate and adjust system controls to ensure proper operation.

4. Customer Interaction and Support

  • Communicate with clients to explain system issues, repair options, and costs.
  • Provide recommendations on system upgrades, maintenance plans, and energy-saving improvements.
  • Ensure customer satisfaction by delivering high-quality service and addressing any concerns or questions.

5. Documentation and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate records of all services performed, including work completed, parts used, and any future service needs.
  • Complete service reports and provide them to clients or supervisors as required.
  • Follow up on service calls to ensure all issues have been resolved and the system is functioning properly.

6. Safety and Compliance

  • Follow all safety protocols and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when working on job sites.
  • Adhere to industry standards and local regulations for HVAC system installations and repairs, including electrical and refrigerant handling safety.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring that safety hazards are minimized.

7. Training and Development

  • Stay current with new HVAC technologies, equipment, and best practices.
  • Attend ongoing training to maintain certifications and improve skills.
  • Share knowledge and mentor junior technicians, as necessary.


Requirements

Qualifications

1. Educational Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited HVAC training program or apprenticeship.
  • EPA 608 Certification for refrigerant handling is required.

2. Experience

  • 2–5 years of experience as an HVAC technician or in a similar role.
  • Experience working with residential, commercial, and/or industrial HVAC systems.

3. Technical Skills

  • Strong understanding of HVAC systems, components, and operations, including heating, cooling, ventilation, and refrigeration.
  • Proficiency in using diagnostic tools, meters, gauges, and other relevant equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, and schematics.
  • Skilled in troubleshooting electrical and mechanical problems.

4. Soft Skills

  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and handle multiple service calls in a day.

5. Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift heavy equipment, tools, and supplies.
  • Capability to work in confined spaces, at heights, and in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and kneel for extended periods.

6. Other Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Willingness to participate in an on-call rotation for emergency service calls.

Additional Skills (Preferred but Not Required)

  • Experience with energy-efficient or environmentally sustainable HVAC systems.
  • Certifications such as NATE (North American Technician Excellence) or other relevant HVAC certifications.
  • Knowledge of smart thermostat systems and home automation.
