The Town of Orono, home to the University of Maine, has an opening for career-oriented candidates to join our fire department. Orono Fire is an all-hazards response agency responsible for the delivery of fire, emergency medical, and technical rescue services to the Town and the University of Maine.
The Community
Orono is situated in Eastern Maine 10 minutes from Bangor, roughly one hour from Acadia National Park, two hours from the Canadian border in Calais, and one and a half hours from Baxter State Park in Northern Maine. Orono’s unique geographical location places numerous dining experiences, cultural activities, outdoor activities, and Maine’s picturesque coastline within easy reach.
Orono is home to over 10,000 people with nearly half of them being college students attending U Maine and other area universities and schools. Orono encompasses just over 19 square miles with 1.4 of those miles covered by water.
Orono is proud to be the home of the University of Maine. Described as one of New England’s premier universities, UMaine hosts students from all 50 states and 67 countries who attend one or more of the school's 200-plus program offerings. In athletics, UMaine is a Division I school best known for its hockey and football teams.
The Position
The work schedule is 24/72, average 42-hour week. Orono Fire operates out of one centrally located station and staffs five firefighters per shift. Orono Fire has the distinction of providing hazardous materials response services for Penobscot County as well as serving as a designated State Regional Response Team.
Candidates who are selected will be required to perform firefighting, driving and operations of apparatus, emergency medical services, community outreach, and special operations duties including hazardous materials response
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid Maine drivers license or ability to attain prior to employment
- Willingness to be a contributing member of a team that values collaboration, exploration, and personal growth
Preferred Qualifications:
Proboard or IFSAC Firefighter I or I/II
Maine or National Registry Paramedic or EMT – Advanced, or EMT. Preference will be given to Paramedics
Current hazardous materials operations or technician certification
Associates Degree in Fire Science, Paramedicine, Business, or similar area of study
Candidates must be eligible to lawfully remain, accept employment, and work in the United States. Candidates must have no disqualifying criminal convictions or conduct. A background check, job performance assessment, fitness assessment, and medical evaluations will be conducted.

All applicants must participate in physical ability testing or submit proof that they have passed a CPAT exam in the State of Maine from a licensed CPAT administrator dated within the twelve (12) months preceding the date of application.
Additional information:
Candidates who are not Firefighter II certified will be required to attain Firefighter II certification within two years of hire.
Candidates will be required to attain hazardous materials technician certification and attend an additional hazardous materials school in Anniston, Alabama as soon as practical after hiring.
Candidates who are not Paramedic certified will be required to attain this licensure within three years of hire.
