About the Role:
As an Tax Accountant youwill be responsible for supporting the preparation, filing, and reconciliation of the company's federal, state, and local tax obligations, including income, premium, and other regulatory tax filings. This role partners closely with the Tax and Finance teams to ensure timely, accurate compliance while identifying opportunities to improve tax processes and controls. The position plays a key role in maintaining the company's regulatory standing and supporting the broader Finance, Risk & Investments function. 

 

The Tax Accountant position reports to the Senior Manager, Tax and can be based out of our office in Topeka or Overland Park, Kansas. We work a hybrid schedule, offering flexibility to work both remotely and on-site.

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Prepare federal, state, and local income tax returns and supporting workpapers, including book-to-tax difference calculations and apportionment schedules
  • Prepare and file state insurance premium tax returns, municipal premium tax returns, and other regulatory data filings, including related journal entries and reconciliations
  • Prepare quarterly income tax provision calculations (ASC 740 / SSAP 101) and related financial statement tax footnote disclosures
  • Reconcile tax-related general ledger accounts, research variances, and recommend improvements to controls and processes
  • Prepare quarterly tax estimates and process related payments throughout the year, ensuring all filings and payments are submitted timely and accurately
  • Conduct tax research on federal, state, and local issues and summarize findings for the Tax team
  • Support internal and external audit requests by preparing schedules, documentation, and analysis as needed
  • Identify and support process improvement and automation opportunities within tax compliance and reporting workflows
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of tax law changes and regulatory requirements relevant to the insurance and financial services industry

 

What We’re Looking For:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
  • 1-4 years of tax or accounting experience; insurance, financial services, or corporate tax experience strongly preferred
  • CPA or active progress toward CPA licensure preferred
  • Experience with premium tax, income tax, and/or statutory (SAP) and GAAP reporting a plus
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, and Excel, with advanced Excel skills preferred
  • Working knowledge of tax and enterprise systems such as Oracle Tax Reporting Cloud, PeopleSoft, or Oracle Fusion a plus
  • Strong analytical skills with high attention to detail and accuracy in financial data handling
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain tax matters to non-tax stakeholders
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple deadlines, particularly during peak filing periods
  • Ability to work independently while knowing when to escalate issues or seek guidance
  • Comfort operating in a dynamic environment with evolving processes and priorities
  • Sound judgment in maintaining confidentiality of sensitive financial and tax data
