Position Summary Pagosa Springs Medical Center (PSMC) is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Sterile Processing Supervisor to oversee the daily operations of the Sterile Processing Department within Surgical Services. This position is responsible for supervising all processes related to the decontamination, cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, preparation, and distribution of surgical instrumentation and equipment. The Sterile Processing Supervisor ensures reprocessing services meet regulatory standards, manufacturer instructions for use, infection prevention expectations, and hospital quality and safety goals. The ideal candidate has strong sterile processing experience, comprehensive knowledge of surgical instrumentation and sterilization standards, and the ability to lead, train, coach, and support staff in a fast-paced surgical services environment. Key Responsibilities Sterile Processing Operations Oversee daily operations and workflow within Sterile Processing Ensure proper decontamination, cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, and storage of surgical instruments and equipment Determine appropriate reprocessing methods based on current manufacturer instructions for use Ensure operating rooms and surgical teams have properly prepared instruments and equipment Maintain accuracy of the instrument tracking system database Follow up on recalls or items that do not meet sterilization standards Leadership & Staff Supervision Supervise Sterile Processing staff, including training, coaching, performance monitoring, and annual evaluations Provide direct observation and constructive feedback to maintain and improve service quality Support onboarding, competency validation, and continuing education for staff Assist with recruitment, interviewing, and retention of department staff Promote a positive, professional, and accountable team culture Quality, Safety & Compliance Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including CDPHE requirements Maintain department readiness for unannounced surveys Ensure policies, procedures, and guidelines are current and compliant Partner with Surgical Services leadership, Quality, and Infection Prevention to identify improvement opportunities Support National Patient Safety Goals and infection prevention standards Inventory, Equipment & Supply Management Monitor and maintain instrumentation, equipment, and supply needs Assist with supply chain tasks, including reordering, organization, outdating, and inventory processes Communicate department needs and capital replacement needs to the Manager of Surgical Services Ensure specialty carts, instruments, and equipment are prepared and available for use Department Planning & Performance Improvement Assist with department short- and long-range improvement planning Support business continuity, capital development, and risk management planning Participate in quality improvement projects and department KPIs Prepare reports, spreadsheets, and documentation related to department operations Maintain staff meeting documentation and support department communication QualificationsEducation High school diploma or equivalent required Associate’s degree preferred but not required Experience Minimum three (3) years of experience as a Certified Sterile Processing Technician required Minimum two (2) years of hospital-related supervisory or management experience required Certifications Current certification as a Sterile Processing Technician required Current AHA BLS certification for healthcare providers required Skills Comprehensive knowledge of surgical instrumentation, equipment, and reprocessing standards Strong understanding of cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, and infection prevention practices Ability to read and apply manufacturer instructions for use Strong leadership, coaching, and communication skills Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced surgical services environment Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office and electronic systems Work Environment This position works in a hospital and surgical services environment with exposure to surgical instruments, chemicals, hazardous materials, blood, bodily fluids, communicable disease, and sharp instruments. The role requires frequent communication with staff, vendors, and hospital departments and involves standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and other physical activity.
