Role Purpose

Corning is hiring a Process Engineer based in Corning, NY. This is an onsite role with relocation assistance available. Travel is a key part of the position and typically runs 50% or more depending on project needs, primarily within the U.S., with occasional international travel.

For engineers who want more variety, more real-world problem solving, and more exposure than a typical plant-based role can offer, this position provides a unique opportunity to work across multiple manufacturing sites, technologies, and business areas. You will be brought into important projects where process engineering support is needed most—whether that means helping with ramp-ups, new equipment, process changes, quality issues, or manufacturing performance improvements. It is a strong fit for someone who wants to stay close to operations, build broad experience quickly, and make a visible impact in the field rather than following a purely office-based design path.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the design and development of new processes and improvements to existing manufacturing processes at Corning facilities worldwide
  • Partner with manufacturing sites to solve process problems, reduce defects, eliminate root causes, and improve overall process performance
  • Support major initiatives such as new plant activity, line start-ups, equipment implementation, production ramp-ups, and quality improvement efforts
  • Apply structured problem-solving methods such as designed experimentation, Six Sigma, and DMAIC to troubleshoot issues and drive sustainable improvements
  • Analyze process data using statistical tools such as Pareto analysis, regression, time charting, analysis of variance, and gauge R&R to guide decision-making
  • Help implement and strengthen process control and process discipline within manufacturing operations
  • Work with suppliers to improve performance and help ensure measurement and inspection systems meet operational and customer needs
  • Evaluate new raw materials, equipment, and process parameters to improve cost, quality, uptime, yield, cycle time, and safety
  • Review performance data, communicate results against established objectives, and recommend immediate actions, long-term corrective actions, and follow-up experiments
  • Document standard operating procedures, experiment plans, and process changes, and mentor operators and peers on established processes

Minimum Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical, materials, ceramic, or mechanical engineering; master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum of 2–4 years of relevant hands-on engineering or manufacturing experience, with a track record of successfully solving process problems based on fundamental understanding
  • Ability to apply engineering principles and practices to technical assignments and process improvement projects
  • Experience completing projects in a manufacturing organization
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to make decisions based on data
  • Ability to use creative and practical problem-solving approaches to develop and implement solutions
  • Ability to collaborate across organizational boundaries and help integrate solutions
  • Must be able to travel significantly, typically 50% or more depending on project needs, primarily domestically, with occasional international travel as needed

Preferred Qualifications and Skills

  • Knowledge of manufacturing operations across complex or multi-site environments
  • Prior experience in a plant or manufacturing engineering group
  • Performance Excellence training, ideally Green Belt certification or higher
  • Lean manufacturing experience
  • Project management skills
  • Mechanical aptitude and equipment understanding
