Duties: The Accountant III performs advanced professional accounting work by applying accounting principles and analytical skills to analyze and support financial operations, prepare and maintain financial reports and schedules, and prepare journal entries. This position supports the Accounting Manager and City Controller's Office by ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of financial records and reporting activities. Maintain, prepare, and verify financial schedules, reports, and supporting documentation for accuracy and completeness. Prepare, compile, and analyze financial information and accounting records. Assist in the preparation of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) and other financial reports. Maintain general ledger accounts and prepare journal entries as necessary. Review department financial information and accounts for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with accounting procedures. Analyze accounting discrepancies and recommend appropriate corrective actions. Collect, organize, and analyze financial data from source documents and accounting records. Design and maintain spreadsheets and financial tracking tools to support accounting operations and reporting requirements. Research and resolve accounting issues related to expenditures, revenues, and balance sheet accounts. Assist with budget preparation, budget monitoring, and processing budget transfer requests. Prepare monthly and annual financial reports, reconciliations, and supporting schedules. Monitor grant expenditures, track grant activity, ensure compliance with grant requirements, and prepare reimbursement requests and reports. Assist with annual external and internal audits by preparing schedules, supporting documentation, and responding to auditor inquiries. Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), governmental accounting standards, City policies, and applicable regulations. Review, develop, evaluate, and recommend improvements to accounting procedures and internal controls to enhance efficiency and accuracy. Participate in the property tax rate and utility rate-setting process by preparing and analyzing financial information. Review invoices, purchase orders, contracts, and other financial documents for accounting accuracy and compliance. Interact professionally with City employees, departments, vendors, auditors, and the public regarding accounting and financial matters. Perform administrative and clerical support duties for the Accounting Manager and City Controller's Office as needed. Complete special projects and assignments related to accounting, financial reporting, and operational analysis. Maintain confidentiality of financial records and sensitive information. Must have and maintain, without interruption, required certifications and licenses. Works assigned schedule and complies with the City's timekeeping and attendance policies. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field. Minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible accounting experience and/or equivalent combination of education and training. Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite applications, with strong working knowledge of Excel, Word, and Outlook. Valid Texas driver's license.

  • Civilian employees accumulate vacation at the following rates:
    • Less than 6 years of service - two weeks of vacation per year.
    • From 6 to less than 11 years of service - three weeks of vacation per year.
    • From 11 to less than 21 years of service – four weeks of vacation per year.
    • From 21 to less than 26 years of service – five weeks of vacation per year.
    • From 26 years of service and up – six weeks of vacation per year.
