Bowie State University (BSU), Maryland鈥檚 oldest Historically Black College/University and a growing hub of innovation, seeks a visionary and collaborative Associate Dean of the Graduate School to support the advancement of graduate education, research capacity, and academic excellence. This position plays a key role in facilitating the alignment of graduate programs with the University鈥檚 strategic goal of achieving Carnegie R2 (High Research Activity) classification, expanding academic offerings and enhancing the graduate student experience. The Associate Dean will work collaboratively across divisions to cultivate a graduate culture grounded in research, innovation, student-centered success, and the enduring mission of Bowie State University to prepare leaders who transform lives.Responsibilities:
Operational & Institutional Effectiveness
路 Assist with the oversight of Graduate School operations, staff supervision, budget
planning, and compliance with institutional and system-level policies.
路 Contribute to the preparation of reports and accreditation materials; ensure accurate data.
collection for graduate enrollment, completion rates, and research productivity.
路 Attend required professional development, Dean鈥檚 Institutes, seminars, required Meetings & required events.
路 Remain abreast of current digital systems necessary for fulfilling responsibilities of a 21st century Associate Dean.
路 Represent the Graduate School on institutional committees and at events in the Dean鈥檚
absence.
路 Coordinate and oversee the Comprehensive Exam process.
路 Oversee Post Baccalaureate Certificate and online programs.
Strategic Leadership & R2 Advancement
路 Assist the Dean with implementing initiatives that support BSU鈥檚 aspiration to achieve Carnegie R2 status, including increasing research output and doctoral program development.
路 Assist the Dean in the implementation of strategic goals and initiatives
for graduate education.
路 Support long-term planning, data analysis, and assessment efforts for continuous
improvement.
Graduate Program Innovation & Expansion
路 Contribute to efforts to assess, revise, and develop graduate and professional programs with an emphasis on interdisciplinary and research-focused degree pathways.
路 Assist with efforts to ensure academic quality and compliance with institutional, state, and accrediting body standards.
Graduate Student Success & Support
路 Strengthen support systems for graduate student recruitment, retention, and degree completion, with a focus on serving underrepresented and nontraditional student populations.
路 Support initiatives that provide mentoring, career development, and research opportunities for graduate students.
路 Oversee the resolution of student academic issues, including petitions, appeals, and progression plans.
路 Monitor student progress; GPA thresholds, best practices, and convey corresponding next steps.
路 Champion inclusive practices that support the HBCU mission of equity, access, and community uplift.
Research Engagement & Capacity Building
路 Promote graduate student involvement in faculty-led research, externally funded projects, and creative activities.
路 Collaborate with faculty and research administrators to expand assistantship, fellowship, and internship opportunities that align with R2 readiness metrics.
路 Advocate for graduate-level research resources, infrastructure, and professional development.
路 Facilitate cross-disciplinary collaboration among faculty to enhance research and innovation.
Faculty Collaboration & Academic Policy
路 Provide guidance to graduate program coordinators and faculty on
curriculum design, assessment, and graduate-level pedagogy.
路 Facilitate faculty development around mentoring, research supervision, and scholarly engagement.
路 Support the development, update, and enforcement of graduate policies, processes and procedures that ensure academic integrity, rigor, and equitable practices.
路 Facilitate cross-disciplinary collaboration among faculty to enhance research and innovation.
Minimum Qualifications:
An earned doctorate from an accredited institution in a discipline consistent with the University鈥檚 academic programs.
Tenure in the faculty role.
A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible academic administrative experience.
Proven ability to work collaboratively with departmental, college, and institutional faculty and staff.
A proven record of active involvement in graduate education and research is preferred.
Ability to think creatively in resolving problems and propose changes.
Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication.
Demonstrated dedication to student and faculty services is essential.
