The Pharmacy Technician, under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, compounds and dispenses medications and other pharmaceutical supplies to hospital inpatients and employees. The technician will mix intravenous medications including chemotherapy consistent with clean room and occupational health standards and will fill automated dispensing machines. Other duties include quality assurance reporting, assisting with medication procurement, and system maintenance. The pharmacy technician will also dispense and deliver a daily medication cart fill, review billing exception reports and apply medication charges as appropriate, coordinate the review and filing of automated dispensing machine reports, monitor and record various temperature and IV room logs, maintain stock levels in the IV room, assist with maintenance of bar-code libraries, empty automated dispensing machine return bins, assist with automated dispensing machine controlled substance discrepancy resolution, prepack liquid and solid oral dose form medications, conduct monthly unit inspections, assist with training new employees and pharmacy students, conduct monthly unit inspections, remove outdated medications from inventory, assist with optimization of medication inventory on assigned units, work with pharmacist to ensure adequate supply of titratable medications. On assigned days and on a rotating basis, the pharmacy technician will work on assigned projects at the direction of the Director or Clinical Supervisor which will include, but are not limited to, the following: Batch compounding, quality assurance audits, batch pre-packing, medication reconciliation audits, inventory, orienting new employees, assisting with system maintenance or any other relevant activity assigned.

    • 2.1 Orders medications and other supplies from vendors as needed.
  • 3. Controlled Substance Inventory and Record Keeping
    • 3.1 Verifies daily controlled substance count in Pyxis during refill/restocking activities.
  • 4. Supports Existing Hospital Information Systems.
    • 4.1 Enters and verifies patient charges and credits daily using hospital information system.
  • 5. Proficiency in IV Compounding
    • 5.1 Complies 100% of time with required clean room attire and cleaning procedures.
  • 6. Maintains a professional working relationship with employees in other departments.
    • 6.1 Keeps staff members informed of patient/clinical issues.
  • 7. Educational and Safety Compliance
    • 7.1 Attends all required safety and educational programs.

Qualifications

EDUCATION


High school diploma or equivalent.


EXPERIENCE


One year of experience in a healthcare setting required. Experience in a hospital setting preferred. One year of experience as a pharmacy technician preferred.


LICENSURE


Licensed as a Pharmacy Technician II or Pharmacy Intern by the Rhode Island Board of Pharmacy is required. Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential required for Pharmacy Technician II license.


SPECIAL SKILLS


Membership in a pharmacy professional organization preferred. Evidence of continued professional growth.
