Stevenson School is a PK-12 co-educational, college-preparatory, boarding and day school with enrollment of 750 students on two campuses in beautiful Central Coast California. The Upper Division campus (Grades 9-12) is located in Pebble Beach. The Lower/Middle Divisions Campus (Grades PK-8) is in nearby Carmel-by-the-Sea. Stevenson School is seeking a Learning Specialist, Upper Division, for a July 1, 2026 start date. The Learning Specialist will join a growing team that currently consists of a Director of Learning Support and Learning Specialist. This team collaborates to support our students' well-being by identifying and responding to their academic needs through short- and long-term attention. The position seeks to improve students’ skills and tools needed for academic success at Stevenson and beyond. 

 

This is a full-time, 10-month per year, non-exempt position with summer project work in preparation for the next school year, as directed by the director of learning support and head of the upper division. 

 

Essential Responsibilities: 


Student Support

  • Develop, customize, and update academic support plans for identified students in partnership with the director of learning support.
  • Manage academic support plans with regular student achievement and progress assessments, including timely check-ins with teachers, parents, guardians, and outside specialists. Document all meetings, noting progress and modifications to plans accordingly.
  • Partner with teachers, families, administrators, and specialists to create and communicate plans for student support.
  • Develop and deliver curriculum for small-group support classes that emphasize increasing executive function and academic self-esteem.
  • Make referrals for outside evaluations.

Administrative Support

  • Analyze student learning evaluations and determine appropriate accommodations and needs, maintaining all related records.
  • Report regularly to academic leadership on individual academic support plans.
  • Assist in the admissions process for the testing, interviewing, and evaluating of applicants for enrollment.
  • Support the process of reviewing testing for new incoming students each summer, providing pre-meetings with incoming families.

Faculty Support

  • Provide relevant faculty training.
  • Engage in classroom observations.
  • Identify, implement, and document accommodations, meeting with teachers and advisors to discuss accommodation plans as needed.
  • Support classroom teachers in identifying effective approaches, as needed. 
  • Develop and implement a curriculum for the study skills courses. In partnership with the learning specialist, share instruction responsibility for teaching the study skills courses, which emphasize increasing executive function and academic self-esteem. 
  • Meet with the academic support team regularly to discuss student needs and strategies.
  • Work with the associate head of the upper division and the department heads to update school policy regarding accommodations.
  • Coordinate and submit accommodation requests for College Board and ACT products.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or the equivalent in education and experience; Master's Degree in Education, Psychology, Counseling, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience working with students who are neurodiverse; experience in assessing, implementing, and overseeing accessibility plans in an educational setting preferred.
  • Ability to provide direct academic support to students as well as coordinate support with campus constituents.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated problem-solving skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and expertise in planning, implementing, and evaluating student service/accommodation programs in an academic environment.
  • The ability to work collaboratively and effectively with diverse groups, including students from around the world and from underrepresented groups. 

The salary range for this position is $60,000 to $105,000 based on experience.
