Education:

• Associate’s degree in criminal justice, Social Services, Social Work, Behavioral Sciences, Public Administration or a related field. Equivalent years of experience are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience for every one (1) year of experience required. 

Experience:

• Three (3) years of progressively responsible work in behavioral health, homelessness outreach or a related field. 

Licenses and Certifications: 

• Valid AZ Driver’s License upon hire
• Ability to attain certification to access confidential databases. 
• Ability to pass background check and become ACJIS certified.

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:

• Experience in a municipal or government setting.
• Experience working with law enforcement programs and community resources.

The Neighborhood & Human Services Department is seeking an empathetic, resilient and solutions-focused Behavioral Health Coordinator (Misdemeanor Probation and Program Coordinator) to join the City’s innovative Triage Team – a multidisciplinary, field-based unit dedicated to helping individuals experiencing mental health crises, substance use disorders, homelessness and other complex behavioral health challenges. In this role, you'll work alongside public safety personnel, code compliance and parks staff, healthcare providers, community organizations, and social service agencies to provide crisis intervention, behavioral health support, case management, outreach, and care coordination. Every day will offer the opportunity to de-escalate crises, connect individuals with meaningful resources and help create safe outcomes for both residents and the community.

Using trauma informed, recovery-oriented, and person-centered practices, you’ll support individuals in reducing unnecessary emergency department visits and involvement with the criminal justice system while improving long-term stability and quality of life. This position requires sound professional judgment, strong relationship building skills, and a genuine commitment to meeting people where they are with empathy, respect, and hope.

This is a benefitted, fixed-term position funded through the current fiscal year (June 30, 2027). The hiring range is up to $75,000 annually, depending on qualifications.

What You’ll Do

No two days are the same on the Triage Team. One moment you may be helping someone experiencing a behavioral health crisis and the next you may be helping families navigate some of life’s most challenging circumstances while making a meaningful impact on the Peoria community.

In this role, you’ll:

• Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to respond to behavioral health crises. 
• Build relationships that change lives by engaging individuals experiencing mental illness, substance use disorders, homelessness and other challenges.
• Develop individualized case management plans, provide counseling, and connect individuals with behavioral health treatment, housing, healthcare, employment and other community resources. 
• Be an advocate for the community by representing the city through outreach events, public education and stakeholder engagement.
• Make an impact by advocating for vulnerable residents, reducing unnecessary emergency and justice-system involvement, all while using data and best practices to continually strengthen services.
