Overview

The Lab Courier's primary responsibility is assisting in the transportation of clinical and anatomical specimens for laboratory testing which includes specific clerical functions.
Qualifications

Required Driver's License - Illinois Secretary of State (ILSOS) with safe driving history


Responsibilities

Key Accountabilities
1. Vehicle Maintenance & Safety
  • Safety Compliance: Maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record and strictly adhere to all traffic laws and safety regulations.
  • Vehicle Care: Ensure the proper use, cleanliness, and maintenance of the assigned Carle Health vehicle, including daily cleaning (supplies, trash, and equipment removal).
  • Maintenance Reporting: Immediately report all vehicle operational concerns, damage, or maintenance needs to the Manager/Supervisor.
  • Fuel Management: Park vehicles with a minimum of ½ tank of fuel to ensure readiness.
  • Parking Protocol: Park vehicles only in designated areas at the end of every shift.
  • Operational Scope: Safely drive up to 650 miles daily in urban and rural environments, including all weather conditions. 
2. Specimen & Supply Transportation
  • Route Efficiency: Perform designated routes for specimen and mail transportation, adhering to strict schedules to ensure efficient, timely delivery.
  • Courier Cooperation: Cooperate with team members during route transitions to ensure smooth handover of supplies and specimens.
  • Customer Service: Maintain a high standard of customer service, interacting professionally with laboratory, hospital, and client staff.
  • Specimen Integrity: Verify that all specimens are properly labeled and utilize sound judgment when accepting specimens for transport.
  • Tracking & Documentation: Accurately log all stops, deliveries, and specimen pickups using the handheld tracking device, defaulting to paper logs during any downtime.
  • Inventory Control: Deliver supplies promptly upon request—do not leave supplies in the vehicle for the next shift. 
3. Communication & Daily Operations
  • Communication: Actively share knowledge and communicate operational updates with peers, coordinators, and stakeholders.
  • Workflow Efficiency: Complete all work and route stops within the assigned timeframes.
  • Information Management: Read company email messages daily to keep abreast of changes to protocols, routes, or company policy.

Compensation and Benefits

The compensation range for this position is $15.32per hour - $24.82per hour. This represents a good faith minimum and maximum range for the role at the time of posting by Carle Health. The actual compensation offered a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked and compensation model.
