The Phlebotomist has the primary responsibility of assuring proper procurement of specimens for clinical testing. This may include collection, transportation, ordering, labeling and processing of specimens as well as other support duties as required or assigned.

Education: H.S. Diploma/GED (Required), Work Experience: Previous Phlebotomy experience
Responsibilities
- Expertly performs venipuncture and micro-collection techniques on diverse patient populations, maintaining a high first-stick success rate and low rejection rates.
- Collects comprehensive specimens within scope, including blood, urine, stool, swabs (nasal/throat), and pediatric draws.
- Strictly adheres to patient identification protocols (e.g., ID bands, two-identifier check) prior to any specimen collection.
- Manages Glucose Tolerance Testing (GTT): Instructs patients, administers glucose solutions, and collects specimens per protocol.
- Performs EKG testing in outpatient facilities according to established standards.
- Provides age-specific, compassionate care to geriatric patients (>65): Protects skin integrity during bandage removal, acts with patience, communicates clearly, and offers patients control over the procedure. Â
- Ensures 100% accuracy in specimen labeling, including initials, date, and time of collection, to guarantee sample integrity.
- Expedites STAT and high-priority specimens to the laboratory without delay.
- Follows pre-analytical protocols for proper specimen transport (e.g., cooling, protecting from light).
- Maintains high quality standards by maintaining a low rejection rate,.
- Maintains proficiency in test catalog usage to verify specimen requirements and handling protocols prior to collection.
- Strictly follows Carle Health safety, infection control, and HIPAA policies.Â
- Proactively communicates with nursing staff regarding patient concerns, testing delays, or clarification of orders.
- Follows up diligently on uncollected or delayed specimens, coordinating with appropriate staff to ensure completion.
- Maintains an organized workstation and assists in inventory management of phlebotomy supplies.

Compensation and Benefits
The compensation range for this position is $18.65per hour - $30.21per hour. This represents a good faith minimum and maximum range for the role at the time of posting by Carle Health. The actual compensation offered a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked and compensation model.
