Veterinary Charge Nurse – Emergency & Critical Care

$30–$36/hour | Peoria, AZ | Full-Time | Day Shift | No Overnights

Schedule: Choose a 4/10 or 3/12 schedule. Day-shift hours will be determined based on business needs. One weekend day required. No overnight shifts.

Arizona Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Center (AVECCC) is hiring an experienced Veterinary Charge Nurse to provide clinical leadership and team development at our high-volume, 24-hour emergency and critical care veterinary hospital in Peoria, AZ. This opportunity is ideal for an experienced veterinary professional who enjoys mentoring teams, developing employees, improving processes, and partnering with hospital leadership to deliver exceptional patient and client care.

In Your Day-to-Day You Will

Develop & Coach the Veterinary Team

  • Lead veterinary technicians, technician assistants, client service staff, laboratory technicians, kennel assistants, and other support staff by example

  • Partner with the Training Coordinator to ensure effective onboarding and ongoing employee development

  • Participate in interviewing and selecting new support staff candidates

  • Review employee leveling criteria and support team members as they work toward career advancement

  • Conduct mid-year and annual performance reviews for support staff

  • Identify individual strengths, development needs, and opportunities for professional growth

  • Provide coaching and implement training when performance gaps are identified

  • Partner with the Leadership Team on corrective action and employee development plans when needed

  • Document training and coaching activities and follow up to ensure improvements are sustained

  • Create and teach department-specific curriculum for ARISE Academy

Strengthen Team Communication & Engagement

  • Conduct beginning-of-shift huddles to establish priorities and align the team

  • Serve as a communication link between hospital leadership and support staff

  • Conduct regular employee check-ins and participate in Leadership Team meetings

  • Help identify opportunities to improve communication, teamwork, and employee engagement

  • Recognize and address signs of employee disengagement that may affect retention

  • Encourage professional development, continuing education, and leadership growth

  • Promote a positive, respectful, and accountable team environment

  • Lead by example and help build a culture focused on collaboration and continuous improvement

Improve Clinical & Hospital Processes

  • Ensure appropriate veterinary medical techniques and hospital procedures are consistently followed

  • Participate in the development and implementation of hospital policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs)

  • Identify opportunities to improve clinical workflows, team performance, and the client experience

  • Help resolve client needs, concerns, and complaints when appropriate

  • Monitor hospital areas to ensure staff responsibilities and operational expectations are being met

  • Partner with the inventory specialist to maintain appropriate inventory levels while supporting departmental budget goals

  • Ensure the department consistently follows OSHA requirements and hospital safety standards

  • Work collaboratively with hospital leadership to identify deficiencies and implement practical solutions

What We’re Looking For

  • Previous experience in a veterinary emergency, critical care, or specialty hospital

  • Veterinary technician or veterinary nursing background with demonstrated leadership experience

  • Experience mentoring, training, coaching, or supervising veterinary support staff

  • Strong understanding of veterinary clinical procedures and patient care

  • Ability to provide constructive feedback and effectively manage performance concerns

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, high-volume veterinary environment

  • Solution-oriented approach with a focus on continuous improvement

  • Ability to lead by example and foster a positive, engaged team culture

  • Commitment to employee development and continuing education

  • Veterinary technician license or certification preferred
