POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position: Team Leader - Community Outreach Mental Health Promotion and Support (COMHPS)

Classification: Full-time, Exempt, Temporary

Hours: 37.5 Hours per week 

Supervisor: Senior Director of Community Partnerships & Regulatory Affairs

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Senior Director of Community Partnerships & Regulatory Affairs, the Team Leader works in support of the Community Wellness Specialists in the COMHPS program who provide community engagement, mental health wellness promotion, individual screenings for mental health conditions, brief counseling, and referral, as indicated to licensed mental health professionals. The Team Leader will work to support the program’s goals and provide; Outreach Activities, Wellness Activities, Assessment, referral, and linkage activities, and Treatment-adjacent service offerings. 

The COMHPS Program aims to support New Yorkers with subclinical mental health needs and establish, maintain, and improve individual and community mental health and wellness. The Team Leader will be responsible for supervising 6 Community Wellness Specialists and is an experienced mental health professional or paraprofessional who assists in the assessment of individuals who might require traditional behavioral health treatment. This is a temporary, direct service position that is grant-funded with an anticipated total duration of 12 months with a contract pending each fiscal year (July-June). 

 Duties and Responsibilities 

• Oversee a team of six Community Wellness Specialists 
• Provide management supervision to Community Wellness Specialists 
 • Hold scheduled supervision weekly with each Community Wellness Specialist 

• Supervise and assist in the assessment of individuals who might require traditional behavioral health treatment 

• With the Senior Director of Community Partnerships & Regulatory Affairs, develop and implement an effective outreach strategy to identify and serve affected individuals, groups, and community. This may include public speaking at community events, at school meetings, with community leaders, and at other forums 

• Establish weekly meetings with entire team to share ideas, connect, and support each other by discussing stress coping techniques and self-care

• Support Community Wellness Specialists in their work with individuals, families, and groups by providing counseling services either virtual or in-person that include outreach, emotional support, individual and group counseling, public education, and referrals when needed 

• Represent program in the community and network with other agencies and partners to ensure needs are met 

• Present to community groups on various psychoeducational topics 
 • Attend at minimum two (2) community events each month 

• Complete daily and monthly log documenting outreach efforts as required by DOHMH

• Support Community Wellness Specialists with workshops, outreach, counseling and education in communities on various psychoeducational topics 

• Provide Treatment Adjacent services with clients at BPC’s two locations (Forest Hills & Jackson Heights)

• Manage assigned engagement sites and ensure prompt and accurate data entry and follow-up 

• Build rapport with fellow team members and supervisors understanding the importance of representing BPC positively 

• Build relationships with community-based organizations, faith-based groups, and local agencies 

• Escalate complex cases to the Senior Director of Community Partnerships & Regulatory Affairs in a timely manner 

• Attend scheduled meetings by BPC, OMH, and DOHMH as required

• Other related duties as assigned 

Requirements:

• Extensive knowledge of community mental health resources

• Excellent interpersonal skills 

• Strong verbal and written communication skills

• Ability to manage team members and resolve conflict 

• Ability to function well in a rapidly changing environment 

• Ability to interface with service providers from all sectors of the service system 

• Strong organizational skills

• Ability to communicate with individuals in a professional and empathetic manner 

•Ability to protect and maintain individuals’ privacy and confidentiality 

•Works well both independently and collaboratively 

•Ability to display a professional and positive attitude 

•Proficient in Microsoft Office 
 • Regular onsite presence at designated BPC locations as determined by organizational and operational needs with a minimum of three (3) days each week. Specific onsite schedule and frequency will be established by leadership based on program requirements.

Qualifications 

• Bachelors Degree in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling or related field 

• 3+ years experience working in Behavioral Health

• Working knowledge of Trauma-Informed Care 

• Cultural Competency required 

• Must be reliable and able to work independently and understand the importance of maintaining confidentiality 

• New York City resident 

• Must be cleared NYS Justice Center through fingerprinting for a Criminal History Records search 

• Bi-lingual a plus
