Job Details

Primary Function:
The primary function of the Chief Perfusionist is the safe operation and management of extracorporeal circulation equipment (heart/lung machine, veno-venous bypass, ventricular assist devices, extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation) during any medical or surgical procedure where it is necessary to support or replace the patient’s cardiopulmonary/ circulatory function (open-heart surgery, liver transplantation, etc.) as well as supervising staff perfusionists charged with the same responsibility. In addition, the Chief Perfusionist is responsible for the set-up, delivery, management, maintenance, and operation of other relevant ancillary services, devices, and equipment.

The Chief Perfusionist is responsible for maintaining a database of open-heart surgical procedures, liver transplants and other procedures in which extracorporeal devices are used by the perfusion staff. Weekly and monthly reports will be prepared and distributed as needed for the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery.

The Chief Perfusionist is responsible for providing his/her staff with daily work assignments, and on-call schedules. Requests for vacation, conference and personal time must be approved and coordinated by the Chief Perfusionist to minimize the impact on the open-heart program.

This position requires providing service for adults (18 – 64 years), older adults (65 years and older), and the frail elderly in a manner that demonstrates an understanding of the functional/ developmental age of the individual served

Job Description

Education/Training/Experience:

Bachelors Degree in Science preferred.  A minimum of four (4) years experience as a clinical perfusionist is required.  The Chief Perfusionist must be a graduate of an accredited Perfusion School, unless they began their perfusion career prior to April 15, 1981.  If they started their Perfusion career before April 15, 1981, it is strongly preferred that they have a Bachelor’s Degree in Science.

Licenses/Certifications: 

The Chief Perfusionist is required to be licensed by the Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine or the Pennsylvania State Board of Osteopathic Medicine and to be Certified (CCP) by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.

Physical Requirements:  Frequently lifts (up to 50 pounds), pulls, pushes, and moves various weights (patients and equipment).  Must be able to withstand extended periods of walking and standing.  Requires manual dexterity for operating equipment and supplies.  Requires stamina for on-call coverage.  Requires dexterity and fine motor skills for handling instruments and small items.
