Job Details

Under the supervision of the Manager or Director, the Supervisor Support Services - Laboratory is responsible for the general supervision of lab assistant and phlebotomist personnel. The Supervisor Support Services oversees the work of staff in performing the collection, processing, labeling, storage, and distribution of samples used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. The Supervisor provides assistance to Director in overseeing all client and administrative support services for the Clinical Laboratories. The supervisor must be able to fulfill all duties of a lab assistant and phlebotomist as needed.

Job Duties

  • Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.

  • Supervises the work of lab assistants in the clinical and histology labs. Supervises the work of phlebotomists in the clinical lab. Distributes work to staff based on assessment of operational needs. Schedules staff to ensure adequate department coverage within budget constraints.

  • Reviews, revises and implements department policies and procedures, plans, and objectives. Ensures that they are fully understood and properly interpreted by department employees.

  • Responsible for training employees, planning, assigning, and directing work; delivering regular performance feedback as well as annual performance appraisals; as well as hiring, terminating, rewarding, and disciplining employees in consultation with the Manager.

  • Evaluates sample processing equipment, techniques, and workflow patterns. Works closely with the lab assistance staff to ensure that pre- and post-analytical laboratory functions are coordinated withlaboratory operations.

  • Interfaces with manager and employees to address complaints and resolve problems in accordance with the organization’s policies.

  • Keeps manager informed on department progress, problems, equipment status, and any significant factors affecting assigned responsibilities, objectives, and budget.

  • Maintains all necessary documentation concerning the operation of the department including statistics, employee records, and quality assurance logs to satisfy regulatory requirements. Handle studies that come to the lab. Work with lab billing staff to assure proper payment.

  • Assists pathologists with frozen sections.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the manager/director.


Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED Diploma or Equivalent

  • 3 years medical laboratory experience required.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate’s Degree perferred

  • 1 year Prior supervisory experience preferred.

  • CPA - Certified Pathologists' Assistant - American Society for Clinical Pathology


Physical Demands
Lift and carry 40-50 lbs. Examples: Push/pull patients on bed, stretcher (requires 29 lbs. push force), lateral transfers up to 50 lbs. of the patient's weight. Frequent to continuous standing/walking. Patient transporters can walk 8-10 miles per shift. *Patient care providers may be required to perform activities specific to their role including kneeling, bending, squatting and performing CPR.
