Position Summary and Qualifications:

The Office of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at Saint Joseph’s University has an opening for a full-time, twelve-month Staff Psychologist position at the Hawk Hill Campus. The position requires in-person work in the primary CAPS office. This person will be responsible for providing individual counseling, group counseling, outreach programming, and consultation to Saint Joseph’s University students at all three locations (Hawk Hill, University City, and Lancaster). Consultation services may also be provided to parents, university faculty/staff, and outside mental health providers. Other key responsibilities include providing crisis intervention services, participating in a rotating on-call system, staffing weekly drop-in counseling coverage, and assisting with the supervision and/or professional development of trainees (externs). This position will report to the Director of CAPS.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides culturally-informed individual counseling to Saint Joseph’s University’s undergraduate and graduate students; including intake evaluations, goal-focused therapy, crisis intervention, and/or referral to appropriate outside services/resources based on assessment/evaluation.

  • Uses empathic responding, active listening, accurate interpretations, and the provision of coping skills, exercise accurate clinical judgment in assessing student’s level of functioning and risk and mutually appropriate treatment goals/interventions.

  • Demonstrates commitment to and experience in working with traditionally underserved or marginalized populations (BIPOC students, students identifying as LGBTQIA+, and others), and collaborates with Student Life staff to provide multi-tiered support for these students.

  • Develops and implements a counseling support group or drop-in workshop on a relevant clinical topic for Saint Joseph’s University students.

  • Conducts case management to ensure contact/coordination with students’ other healthcare providers, such as psychiatrists, nutritionists, and/or physicians as deemed clinically appropriate.

  • Provides consultation to parents, faculty, staff, and students regarding a variety of mental health issues and concerns associated with the collegiate environment.

  • Provides individual and/or group clinical supervision of externs and/or augments their professional development by developing seminar presentations and leading group discussions on germane clinical topics.

  • Develops and implements educational, prevention-based programming on a wide variety of mental health topics geared to the broader Saint Joseph’s community.

  • Provides clinical back-up to a 24 hour on-call crisis response service as part of a staff rotation.

  • Provides 2 hours of weekly drop-in coverage for the purpose of crisis intervention and brief consultation for students with urgent concerns.

  • Participates in University sponsored events to support campus initiatives, including those scheduled on weekends or after hours.

  • Maintains accurate and timely record-keeping for all clinical work.

  • Maintains APA professional ethics in all areas.

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Attends pertinent professional development seminars and reports back highlights to professional staff and trainees.

  • Oversees and remains abreast of research, current trends, best practices and legal/regulatory compliance related to areas of responsibility.

  • Participates in management/updates for referral resource site (e.g., ThrivingCampus).

  • Exhibits an understanding of and a commitment to the mission of the Division of Student Life and Saint Joseph’s University.

  • Carries out additional duties as assigned by the Director.

Minimum Qualifications (Education/Training and Experience):

Required

  • PhD or PsyD in Clinical or Counseling Psychology

  • Licensed or license eligible in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

  • Documented experience providing mental health counseling to a college student population

  • Multicultural competence and skill in working with students from diverse backgrounds and under-represented groups

  • Ability to communicate ideas clearly to a diverse audience, providing positive and critical feedback to supervisees, clients, and colleagues to facilitate their development

  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative in individual and team projects

Preferred

  • PhD or PsyD earned from an APA-accredited program

Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:

  • Approximately 7-9 times per year, participate in a week-long back-up rotation for an after-hours on-call service.

  • Occasional evening or weekend hours for programs and crisis response.

  • Must be able to sit for long periods.

Estimated Pay Range:

The estimated pay range for this position is $75,000-$79,800 annually. Offered salary will be commensurate with work experience and educational background.
