Job Summary

The Transformer Logistics Specialist is responsible for coordinating safe, efficient, and timely inbound and outbound freight, with primary responsibility for transformer and component shipments. The role serves as the logistics subject-matter resource for selecting the appropriate transportation method, trailer configuration, load preparation, and off-loading approach based on the specific transformer or component being shipped. Success requires strong logistics broker relationship management, excellent communication, sound judgment, and exceptional attention to detail from shipment planning through final delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage day-to-day relationships with logistics brokers, carriers, drivers, and third-party logistics (3PL) providers; understand each provider’s capabilities and select the best-fit partner for the specific load.
  • Evaluate each transformer shipment to determine its unique transportation requirements based on transformer type, indoor/outdoor application, dimensions, weight, configuration, orientation, and other load-specific factors.
  • Specify the appropriate trailer type and transportation method for each shipment, considering load feasibility, safe loading, route or site constraints, and potential issues such as clearance over the railroad tracks at the CORE facility.
  • Coordinate freight ranging from parcel/UPS shipments through full truckload and heavy-haul movements, including transformers, oil, bushings, and other components or parts.
  • Assess the planned customer off-loading situation, including crane, forklift, rigging, or other equipment needs, and incorporate those requirements into transportation planning and communication.
  • Schedule and coordinate loading and shipment activities based on production readiness, customer requirements, transportation availability, and delivery expectations.
  • Maintain constant, clear communication with Production, Shipping, Sales/Customer Service, shop floor personnel, brokers, vendors, customers, crane/rigging teams, and other stakeholders to keep shipments aligned and expectations clear.
  • Communicate planned ship dates, estimated delivery dates/times, delays, changes, and in-transit updates; proactively resolve issues that could affect safe loading, transportation, or on-time delivery.
  • Coordinate with plant personnel and transportation providers to confirm transformers are properly positioned, secured, and prepared for shipment in accordance with applicable safety and transportation requirements.
  • Understand freight-pricing thresholds and determine when a standard freight charge is appropriate versus when a dedicated freight quote should be obtained.
  • Track shipments through carrier and freight portals, including familiarity with the Old Dominion portal, and maintain accurate shipping, scheduling, freight, and delivery records.
  • Troubleshoot logistics issues and make timely decisions as conditions change, including load, trailer, scheduling, carrier, customer-site, or delivery challenges.
  • Coach Sales and other internal partners on logistics processes, transportation constraints, lead times, and customer expectations.
  • Contribute to the future development and documentation of logistics standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree preferred, 3-5 years’ experience required.
  • Thorough working knowledge of transformer transportation requirements, including the ability to match transformer type and configuration to the appropriate trailer and determine when tarping or other protective preparation is required.
  • Strong understanding of trailer types, load orientation, weight/dimensional considerations, securement and loading feasibility for industrial equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and manage productive relationships with freight brokers, carriers, 3PL providers, vendors, and drivers, including knowing which provider is best suited for a particular load.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate clearly and tactfully with customers, brokers, vendors, drivers, shop floor employees, Sales, and other internal teams.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills; ability to manage multiple shipments, requirements, schedules, records, and changing priorities without losing critical load-specific details.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot and make sound decisions on the fly.
  • Ability to set expectations, communicate changes proactively, and maintain professionalism and diplomacy when schedules or transportation conditions change.
  • Comfort using freight portals and routine business communication tools including email, phone, and text messaging.

Benefits:

  • PTO & Paid Holidays
  • Medical, dental, vision insurance, long-term disability coverage
  • Life insurance
  • 401(k) with matching
