HHM Talent is assisting a client in their search for a Controller in Phoenix, AZ.

Position Overview

We are seeking a technically strong, technology-forward Controller to own the day-to-day financial operations of the company. This role is ideal for a hands-on accountant who thrives on getting into the details, building efficient processes, and leveraging modern tools to scale a finance function across a multi-country clinic network. The Controller will report directly to senior leadership and partners across the business to ensure accurate, timely, and insightful financial information.

Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Close

  • Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process end-to-end.
  • Prepare accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Reconcile accounts, review journal entries, and resolve discrepancies independently.
  • Deliver financial reporting packages to leadership with clear commentary on variances and trends.

Technical Accounting

  • Serve as in-house expert on accounting treatment for revenue recognition, accruals, intercompany activity across a multi-location and multi-country footprint, and other technical areas.
  • Research and document positions on new or complex transactions.
  • Maintain accounting policies and ensure consistent application across the organization.

Systems & Technology

  • Act as the finance system owner for Sage Intacct (or comparable ERP), including configuration, dimensions, reporting, and integrations with adjacent tools (AP automation, expense management, payroll, billing systems, etc.).
  • Identify opportunities to automate manual workflows and reduce close cycle time.
  • Build and maintain reports, dashboards, and data extracts; comfort with SQL, advanced Excel, or BI tools (Power BI, Looker, Tableau) is strongly preferred.
  • Lead or support finance technology evaluations and implementations.

Internal Controls & Compliance

  • Maintain and strengthen internal control procedures appropriate for a multi-location healthcare services business.
  • Ensure compliance with tax, regulatory, and reporting requirements across jurisdictions, including US, Canada, and UK considerations.

Audit & External Partners

  • Manage the annual external audit, including preparation of schedules, workpapers, and responses to auditor requests.
  • Coordinate with tax preparers, banking partners, and other external stakeholders.

Financial Analysis & Business Partnership

  • Provide analysis to support pricing, location performance, capital decisions, and operational initiatives.
  • Partner with operations and leadership to translate financial data into actionable insight.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA strongly preferred.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including meaningful time in a senior accountant, accounting manager, or assistant controller role. Public accounting background is a plus.
  • Deep working knowledge of US GAAP and month-end close mechanics.
  • Hands-on ERP experience required; Sage Intacct experience strongly preferred. Demonstrated ability to configure, optimize, and report out of a modern accounting system.
  • High technology aptitude: advanced Excel required; experience with SQL, BI tools, or scripting and automation (Python, Power Query, etc.) is a meaningful plus.
  • Experience in multi-location, services, or healthcare-adjacent businesses is a plus. Exposure to multi-currency or international operations is a plus.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a bias toward building scalable processes rather than working around broken ones.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; able to explain accounting concepts to non-finance partners.
  • Comfortable operating as an individual contributor today, with the runway to build and lead a team over time.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Competitive base salary.
  • Medical, dental and vision insurance.
  • Retirement savings plan.
  • Professional development opportunities.
