Summary

The Field Mechanic (Heavy Equipment) is responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing Heavy Civil Construction Equipment.

Essential Job Functions

  • Diagnoses problems and performs mechanical repair and maintenance of heavy civil construction equipment (including, but not limited to, bulldozers, scrapers, backhoes, front end loaders, yard trucks, forklifts, and company vehicles).
  • Inspects and documents condition of equipment for items needing repair or service.
  • Replaces or repairs defective parts using hand tools, power tools, cutting torches, and welding equipment.
  • Rebuilds or fabricates parts.
  • Lubricates moving parts and operates repaired equipment to verify conformance to specifications.
  • Performs tasks per preventative maintenance checklist.
  • Drives pick-up or service truck.
  • Safety conscious and responds to inquiries promptly; follows through to ensure the situation is taken care of correctly.
  • Other related duties as required or assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in repair/maintenance/welding in heavy civil construction equipment required
  • High School diploma or its equivalent
  • Must be able to cut, weld and fabricate
  • Experience and knowledge of CAT ET diagnostic tool.
  • Must have the ability to climb ladders and operate equipment in a safe and efficient manner
  • Working knowledge and understanding of OSHA rules and regulations
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment are required
  • Previous experience reading technical manuals and understanding of schematic diagrams preferred

Additional Requirements

  • This position is exposed to high temperatures; cool/cold temperatures; loud noises and fumes.
  • Work in the construction area poses significantly greater risk due to moving construction equipment and active construction zones with trip and fall hazards.
  • Requires valid state-specific driver’s license and acceptable motor vehicle record that meets Haydon’s insurability requirements.
