Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification. The position is eligible for overtime compensation for all hours worked over 40 in the designated workweek.

About the Position

Are you a detail-oriented, self-motivated professional ready to drive impact in criminal law? In this role, you will provide critical legal secretarial support to attorneys within our Criminal Division, bringing your strong knowledge of criminal court proceedings and legal documentation to the forefront as you draft petitions, briefs, legal opinions, pleadings, motions, complaints, and indictments.

Using Microsoft Office programs and specialized legal tools, you will independently navigate daily priorities, manage time-sensitive criminal filings, and meet fast-paced statutory deadlines. Success in this position relies on sound decision-making, exceptional communication, active daily collaboration across email, phone, in-person, and virtual spaces, and a readiness to step into criminal court proceedings when needed.

We Require

  • Two years of experience in a legal setting and knowledge of legal documents and proceedings

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Post-secondary education may substitute for up to one year of the experience requirement

We Also Value

Applicants with previous Maricopa County Attorney's Office experience, a certificate of completion from an accredited secretarial school, a legal secretary training program, or work experience in a public or private law firm as a legal secretary

Job Contributions

  • Under the direction of staff attorneys, assist with the preparation and filing of correspondence, legal documents, and briefs from hard copy, oral, or mechanical dictation on a personal computer

  • Type and prepare complaints, indictments, and related charging documents. Retrieve and distribute electronic pleadings and minute entries

  • File documents with the court, create and maintain case files, and enter and retrieve case information from various databases. Utilize external databases to access and retrieve criminal history and case information

  • Pull case files for court calendars and maintain conference room reservation calendar

  • Photocopy/scan discovery, adult probation packets, and other documents/materials

  • Redact documents for disclosure/discovery. Schedule interviews with victims and witnesses

  • Hand-deliver and pick up documents on and off-site. Pick up, sort, and distribute incoming and outgoing mail

  • Answer multi-line telephone, screen, and transfer calls, take messages, answer general information questions from the public, other County departments, and outside agencies. Receive and greet incoming visitors

Working Conditions

  • Office environment includes bright lighting and working in close proximity to others

  • Position requires sitting for prolonged periods of time and repeating motions with wrists, hands, and fingers

  • Position works with other team members and may have frequent interruptions

  • Position requires accuracy, concentration/vigilance, high volume of work, handling complicated tasks, stressful situations, teamwork, time pressures, and unscheduled or frequently changing tasks

  • Exposure to traumatic subject matter (crime scenes, accidents, etc.)

  • Ability to travel, via walking or other method, up to 0.50 miles between job-related locations

  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds and occasionally carry items

  • Teleworking or alternative work schedule options may be offered after six months of employment, based on business needs

  • Bureau assignment cannot be guaranteed and is based on business need
