Job Summary:
The Drug Diversion Specialist (Diversion Specialist) provides oversight and direction for the daily operations of the Drug Diversion Prevention, Detection, and Response Program. The Diversion Specialist is accountable for all aspects of drug diversion education, prevention, monitoring, investigation, and reporting at Virtua.
Position Responsibilities:
Establish and maintain an effective drug diversion education program for all staff, including physicians in training, mid-level providers, and medical staff.
Provide leadership and actively participate in Virtua’s multidisciplinary education activities relating to drug diversion, impairment, and controlled substance handling.
Establish and maintain a comprehensive surveillance and auditing program to detect drug diversion and non-compliance in medication handling.
Collect and track institution-wide diversion-related data, including, but not limited to, medication handling issues, medication security issues,concerns about healthcare provider behavior/performance, patient complaints related to pain relief, disputed orders for controlled substances, and patient safety event data that may relate to diversion or impairment.
Lead the investigation process of suspected drug diversion incidents.
Coordinate with the Diversion Response Team to assess cases of potential diversion and direct any Response Team activities.
Ensure that all required internal and external reporting occurs following each diversion event.
Work collaboratively with all relevant departments and serve as a controlled substance and diversion resource for all staff.
Position Qualifications Required:
Required Experience:Â
A minimum of five years experi- ence in investigations, interviewing witnesses, and investigative report processing; OR a minimum of eight years of health care experience required.
Familiarity with Accreditation standards, DEA, EPA, CMS, and FDA regulations, and ISMP and ASHP guidelines and recommendations
Required Education:Â
BSN required.
