Overview

Phlebotomist/Specimen processor will collect and prepare specimens to send to hospital lab for busy, 3-provider primary care clinic.

 

 


Responsibilities

Position Specific Competencies: Phlebotomist/Specimen Processor 

In addition to the following essential position competencies, other competencies may be required to meet changing organization needs. 

 

  1. Uses an appropriate problem-solving approach to plan services. 
  1. Performs phlebotomy services per provider’s orders, processes specimens, prepares specimens for transport. 
  1. Any other duty as assigned but within the scope of practice for a Phlebotomist/Lab Processor by the clinic manager and or provider (s). 
  1. Demonstrates a sense of urgency relating to patient's level of distress. Adjust to patient’s needs depending upon the situation. 
  1. Recognizes how fraud and abuse interplay into daily roles. 

 

  1. Provides services with consideration of the recipient's needs. 
  1. Maintains work area in neat, organized manner. 
  1. Secures patient information in desk drawers or folders. 
  1. Greets patients in courteous manner, secures 2 forms of personal identifiers prior to procedure (blood draw/specimen collection), explains procedure/answers questions to ensure patient’s understanding. 
  1. Wears FH name badge and introduces self to patient prior to specimen collection.   
  1. Assures specimens are sent to the correct reference lab for processing based on patient’s insurance (LabCorp, Quest, FH).  

 

  1. Uses equipment/supplies correctly. 
  1. Maintains equipment in proper working order. Follow manufacturers' manuals for care of office equipment. Notify manager of equipment failure. 
  1. Maintains adequate supply of materials, and forms. Use supplies conservatively and orders when necessary. Ensures that supplies are current and not expired. Replenishes stock for lab and office. 
  1. Keeps a neat orderly and safe work area. 
  1. Performs blood and urine specimen collection such as drug screenings and CLIA waived testing as needed. 
  1. Ensures patient’s water supply is stocked (water jugs or refrigerator). Communicate with manager when stock is low to prevent running out of water.    

 

  1. Uses appropriate safety and infection control measures. 
  1. Adheres to established infection control measures, including but not limited to Biohazard waste storage and disposal. 
  1. Assures patient safety by following applicable patient safety goals. 
  1. Responsible for Biohazard containers ensuring boxes for pick up are labeled, sealed and stored until retrieved.   

 

  1. Teaches/directs/advises/informs others in an appropriate manner. 
  1. Communicates clearly with providers, manager and co-workers and patients. 
  1. Educates and informs patients about laboratory procedures, using basic simple language and principles of adult learning. 
  1. Involves clinic manager in all patient concerns/complaints in a timely fashion after  

first trying to diffuse the situation. 

 

  1. Reports/records information appropriately 
  1. Monitors and manages patient laboratory needs via in-basket.  Uses approved format for documenting when patients are required to return for additional labs.  
  1. Advises front desk staff when faxing patient paperwork to ensure completion of task. 
  1. Readily accepts changes in jobs duties as part of department need such as checking providers outbox twice a day to fax forms to necessary party. 
  1. Assists team with quality metrics and key performance indicators (KPI). 
  1. Other duties, as assigned. 

 

Additional Skills: 

Experience with practice management systems; office automation skills: strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills; good organizational skills. Committed to and demonstrates excellent customer service when dealing with all types of customers. 

 

Working Conditions:

Physical Requirements: 

Ability to access all areas of the facility; ability to sit for prolonged periods of time; visual and hearing acuity; ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, patients, and physicians both verbally and written. 


Qualifications

Qualifications: 

The following, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of the position. 

 

Education/formal training/licensure/certifications/experience: 

High school graduate. One-year Technical College or Phlebotomy certification preferred.
