Pittsburg State University is accepting applications for an Assistant Director of Residence Life in the Housing and Residence Life department.  The primary purpose of the Assistant Director of Residence Life is to provide administrative leadership to ensure that the residential programming component of the department contributes to a productive living-learning environment for students. This position serves as a member of the supervisory management team charged with oversight of the residential life of Housing & Residence Life services. 

Duties and Responsibilities

30%  Supervision of Personnel

  • Provide adequate training and support for Area Coordinators.
  • Perform both formal and informal periodic evaluations of Area Coordinators through weekly one-on-one meetings and annual evaluation period. Provide constructive feedback and assist with coordination of professional development.
  • Indirectly supervise student staff which can include Graduate Assistants, Apartment Managers, Community Learning Assistants, Lead Resident Assistants, and Resident Assistants.
  • Assist in the planning and overall coordination of the recruitment, selection, training, supervision and evaluation of RAs, Lead RAs, AMs, CLAs and interim staff as needed. 
  • Review and update student staff job descriptions, duties, responsibilities, and conditions of the student staff agreements and Housing & Residence Life expectations.
  • Design and implement innovative Residential Communities aligned with industry best practices to enhance support, engagement, and resources for students living in on-campus housing.
  • Establish, strengthen, and manage collaborative campus partnerships to successfully deliver Living Learning Programs and co-curricular programming.
  • Conduct ongoing evaluation and assessment of Residential Community initiatives to improve student experiences, maximize impact, and inform strategic enhancements.
  • May assist in on-call rotation for the department with reporting to the Director of Housing & Residence Life. 
     

25%     Administrative

  • Lead the development and implementation of a comprehensive Residential Curriculum model across all housing communities to elevate student engagement, learning, and the overall on-campus experience.
  • Gather, analyze, and interpret data to assess the effectiveness of student support initiatives within residence halls, using results to drive continuous improvement of the Residential Curriculum model.
  • Oversee budget allocations for all hall programming and staff development. 
  • Have knowledge of daily operations of main office including the housing office management system software.
  • Provide consultation to Area Coordinators as required relative to emergency or crisis situations as needed. 
  • Assist Area Coordinators in making sure buildings are maintained, track furniture needs, make sure work orders or other work is followed up on regarding maintenance.
  • Coordinate student staff stipends and communicate with appropriate staff to ensure payment.
  • Maintain programming records and ensure efforts meet expectations.

 

20%     Representation

  • Attend and participate in on-campus programs and events as a representative of Housing & Residence Life (i.e. admissions events, orientation, student activities, etc.)
  • Work cooperatively with other campus units such as University Police, Behavioral Intervention Team, Case Management & Student Support, Student Health Services, Student Success, and Admission to ensure the delivery of essential services and in making appropriate referrals.
  • Participate in selective campus working groups and committees, to be determined.

 

15%     Conduct Officer

  • Collaborate with Director of Student Support & Case Management to provide direction to staff and students in communicating, interpreting, and administering residence hall and University policies and procedures as needed.
  • Serve as the appellate conduct officer for cases heard by Area Coordinators as requested by Director of SSCM.
  • Follow up on concerns regarding individual residents as conveyed by Housing & Residence Life Leadership.
  • Hold conduct meetings with students as needed and adjudicate appropriate educational sanctions.

 

10%     Other

  • Assist with projects or provide assistance for the Housing & Residence Life department and functions.
  • Assist with leadership for camps and conference services.
  • Coordinate research and assessment within the residence halls and apartments regarding student experiences and use those results to drive our residential experience and department offerings. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Housing & Residence Life.

 

Education and Experience

Required Education and Experience - Time of Hire

  • Master’s degree in higher education administration/counseling or related field 

  • Two years of previous housing, apartment/residence hall experience 

 

Preferred Education and Experience - 

  • Programmatic and supervisory experience and demonstrated student organizational leadership experience

Appointment Duration: 12 months

Work Schedule: Full Time, Monday – Friday, rotating on-call duty Saturday and Sunday

Salary: Commensurate with Experience
