At Smith+Nephew we design and manufacture technology that takes the limits off living.      The R&D Technician I supports the prototyping shop by producing high-quality mechanical components for engineering and product development teams. This entry-level role focuses on learning shop processes, operating manual machines, basic additive manufacturing, and interpreting engineering drawings with close supervision. The technician contributes to early-phase prototype builds that support the development of medical robotic systems.

What will you be doing?

· Manufacture prototype components using manual mill, manual lathe, hand tools, and basic shop equipment.

· Operate and maintain 3D printers for rapid prototyping.

· Read and interpret basic engineering drawings, following tolerances and surface finish requirements.

· Perform basic measurements using calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and other metrology tools.

· Assist higher-level technicians with CNC setup, programming, and fixture preparation.

· Maintain clean, safe, and organized work areas according to shop standards.

· Communicate progress and issues with engineers and senior technicians.

· Document work performed, ensuring traceability and quality compliance aligned with medical device development processes.

What will you need to be successful? 

· Technical certificate or associate degree in machining, manufacturing technology, or related field preferred.

· Basic understanding of machining principles and mechanical drawings.

· Hands-on experience with manual machines or 3D printers is a plus.

· Ability to follow detailed instructions and develop new manufacturing skills.

· Strong attention to detail and quality mindset.
