At the SEI AI Division, we conduct research in applied artificial intelligence and the engineering challenges related to the practical design and implementation of AI technologies and systems. We currently lead a community-wide movement to mature the discipline of AI Engineering for Defense and National Security.Ā Ā

Position Summary:  As aĀ research scientistĀ with provenĀ expertiseĀ inĀ advanced computing,Ā youĀ willĀ identify, shape, apply,Ā andĀ conductĀ researchĀ inĀ supportĀ ofĀ critical U.S. government needs.Ā 
Ā 

The ideal candidate will have a strong background with hands-onĀ experienceĀ in one or more of the following technology areas:Ā hardware/software co-design,Ā performanceĀ optimizationĀ withĀ heterogeneousĀ and alternative computingĀ systems (CPU/GPU/NPU/etc.),Ā FPGA design,Ā high-performance computing (HPC),Ā distributed and scalable computing,Ā compilerĀ technology,Ā andĀ algorithm optimization.Ā AdditionalĀ expertise in applying AI/ML to electromagnetic spectrum operationsĀ is desired.Ā

DutiesĀ 

  • Participate inĀ novel research in advanced computing and applied machine learning.Ā Ā 

  • Contribute toĀ anĀ interdisciplinary team to turn research results into prototype operational capabilities for government customers and stakeholders.Ā Ā 

  • Conduct rapid prototyping toĀ demonstrateĀ and evaluate technologies in relevant environments.Ā 

  • Test and evaluate new and novel systems for performance and usability.Ā 

  • Collaborate with researchers, developers, engineers, designers, technical leads, campus labs, and our government customers to understand challenges, needs, and potential solutions.Ā 

  • Mentor and teach junior staff,Ā andĀ lead/co-leadĀ design sessions.Ā 

  • Explore the latest in advanced hardware, including FPGAs, CGRAs, TPUs, and emergent technologies such as neuromorphic and analog processors.Ā 

  • Develop and deliver compelling technical presentations for diverse audiences, tailor content for varied stakeholders, speak at conferences and workshops, and publish in pertinent peer-reviewed journals.Ā

RequirementsĀ 

  • BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline withĀ eightĀ (8) years of experience; OR MS in the same fields withĀ fiveĀ (5) years of experience; OR PhD withĀ twoĀ (2) years of experience.Ā 

  • You must be able & willing to work onsite in our Pittsburgh offices 5 days per week.

  • AbleĀ to travel toĀ the ArlingtonĀ SEI office, sponsor sites, conferences, and offsite meetings on occasion. Moderate (25%) travel outside of your home location.Ā 

  • You will be subject to a background check investigation and will need to obtain andĀ maintainĀ a Department of War security clearance.Ā

Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesĀ 

  • A publishedĀ track recordĀ of conducting research and applying scientific methods.Ā Ā 

  • Mastery of C/C++, Python, Verilog/VHDL, and/or other pertinent languages and software tools and frameworks.Ā 

  • ExperienceĀ participatingĀ inĀ research projects and collaborating across research teams and mentoring other researchers.Ā Ā 

  • Experience working with Department of War,Ā Intelligence Community, or other US Government entities.Ā 

  • Familiarity with emerging trends and opportunities in industry and government.Ā Ā
