About the Role

The Sr. Tooling Engineer drives optimized tooling design in the injection molded plastics supply chain to support world class manufacturing at scale. This role is part of an advanced manufacturing team focused on manufacturing capacity expansion and strategic growth.

Accountable For

The Sr. Tooling Engineer is responsible for assessing the current and future manufacturing capabilities of injection mold tooling and process in the supply chain.  They will work closely with supply chain, procurement, quality,  manufacturing and the network of injection molded plastics suppliers to develop tool designs and process to support the strategic growth of the Eos manufacturing operation.

Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced DFMs, evaluate part feasibility and proactively provide solutions to meet both Engineering and Manufacturing requirements

  • Providing technical solutions and leading engineering sub-contractors in process design, layout, and construction of new plastics tooling

  • Designing and modelling all aspects of injection molds: Mold layout, parting lines, actions, and mechanism

  • Support validation and PPAP for new and updated tooling with the supplier quality team  

  • Using a data-based approach to optimize molding processes to reach quality and production requirements

  • Work with the Quality Department to resolve RCCA’s in manufacturing regarding injection molded components

  • Work with supplier quality to audit injection molders’ tooling and processes and make recommendations for repairs or improvements to support production requirements and part quality performance.

  • Collaborate with product designers to improve the manufacturing feasibility of plastic parts using extensive tooling experience as well as industry best practices

  • Provide guidance in the selection of machinery and equipment to improve the performance and consistency of our injection molded part suppliers

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Materials Engineering or Plastics Engineering

  • 10+ years of injection mold tooling design and manufacturing experience

  • Proficient in tool design with 3D modeling, SolidWorks preferred

  • Strong knowledge of plastics molding processes, post-molding operations, and mold flow simulations (filling and cooling analyses)

  • Strong knowledge of SPC, DOE, Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), and GD&T principles

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration with internal teams and external vendors

Travel

  • Overnight/North America: 10-25%

Working Conditions

  • Office Environment - Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time and occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.  Required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading. May be required to exert up to 35 pounds of force occasionally to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

  • Factory - The worker may be subject to hazards. Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, vibration, moving vehicles, electrical current, exposure to temperature changes or exposure to chemicals.   While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, odors, dust, mists, and gases. The noise level in the work environment can be loud. Required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts at distances close to the eyes. Machinery operation requires the use of safety equipment to include but not limited to eye safety glasses, hearing protectors, work boots, and lab coats. May be required to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
