Faculty.Professor.Assistant - Full-Time

The Department of Radiation Oncology at the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, is recruiting outstanding basic/translational science faculty at the Assistant Professor level (appointment stream).

The Assistant Professor will be expected to develop an active research program focusing on basic and translational research in Thoracic Cancer. In this regard, you will be expected to be a member, work closely with other members of the Thoracic Cancer Disease Team, and develop collaborations with members of HCC research programs. You will be expected to write short proposals about your research program, which will be used by the Center to seek funding from philanthropic and other sources, to help cover the Institute's financial commitments to you. You will be expected to participate in the teaching and training of medical students and radiation oncology residents. As our department grows, we will be redefining the clinical, teaching, and research roles to meet the growing patient population. Teaching responsibilities include bedside teaching and precepting of medical trainees, and delivering 1-2 didactic lectures per year. The Assistant Professor will be expected to provide 4 days of outpatient clinic per week at Hillman Cancer Center ("HCC"), or at other locations as reasonably requested by the Department Chair. The Assistant Professor will participate in weekly Thoracic cancer disease team meetings and other activities as designated by the Department Chair.

Successful candidates will have a PhD, MD, or equivalent in Biological Sciences or related field and an exceptional scientific research record encompassing basic and/or translational research using state-of-the-art approaches. Candidates for this position should have completed an accredited residency and be Board Certified or in the process of becoming Board Certified through the American Board of Radiology, as well as having a demonstrated trajectory in basic or translational research. Assistant Professor candidates shall have experience in cutting-edge cancer research in the field of Basic and/or Translational Research. The ideal Candidate shall be an established independent investigator with interdisciplinary translational research in biology, significant publications, and extramural grant funding. The Candidate will have a strong record in teaching and mentoring graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty members. The Candidate should have a strong commitment to collaborating with clinical and/or translational scientists and have the necessary skills for grant writing and producing peer-reviewed publications. 

The Department of Radiation Oncology has a mission of providing exceptional patient care, innovating next-generation research solutions to improve cancer patient outcomes, and educating future caregivers and researchers. The department includes multiple NIH-funded researchers at all levels, with junior faculty funded on R03 and K08 awards, as well as senior faculty leading R01 and P50 (SPORE) awards. Our department also has a strong mentorship program with regards to research training with current residents who have resident research grants through foundations such as ASCO and RSNA. Research faculty in the department are actively involved in multiple world-class research programs within Hillman, including Cancer Biology, Cancer Immunology and Immunotherapy, Cancer Therapeutics, Cancer Virology, and Genome Stability Programs. Specialized resources within the Center for Precision Radiobiology, led by faculty in the Department of Radiation Oncology, include a stereotactic small animal irradiator as well as a dedicated radiochemistry laboratory for unsealed source radiopharmaceutical therapy research.   The clinical department is actively involved in clinical trials through NRG Oncology, ECOG-ACRIN, Alliance, SWOG, and ETCTN trial networks as well as investigator-initiated trials with a dedicated radiation oncology disease team and clinical research which extends out to over 25 clinical sites.
