The Mellon College of Science (MCS) is home to four departments and many programs and research centers that cross disciplines. We approach scientific problems from fresh angles using creative interdisciplinary approaches while drawing on our departmental strengths in the core sciences. MCS faculty members are nationally and internationally recognized for their research in a variety of fields, including polymer science, cosmology, mathematical finance, and neuroscience.

We are seeking a Research Associate in the Barth Laboratory here at CMU. Candidates should have experience with small animal surgery including stereotaxic brain injections, cranial window preparations for imaging, a background in bioinformatics and the ability to generate and manipulate large datasets, and familiarity with image analysis programs including ImageJ, Suite2P, and MatLab.  Applicants should also be familiar with histological preparation of brain samples for immunohistochemistry and fluorescence microscopy analysis.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Uses a variety of software packages to input, manipulate, collect, and record results or observations.
  • Performs research experiments following experimental protocol and procedures. Researches and documents information by compiling and maintaining accurate and detailed records.
  • Summarizes statistical information for analysis, examination, or presentation; writes technical reports. May build and validate quantitative models.
  • Identifies problems and obstacles to progress; develops strategies to solve problems.
  • May program software in support of job functions. Attends project meetings.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree is Biological Sciences, Neuroscience, or related field.
  • 1-3 years of relevant work experience.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, reasoning, and communication skills.
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
