Tooling Support Specialist Position Overview
The Tooling Support Specialist supports daily tool crib operations by maintaining cutting tools, tool holders,
consumables, and related inventory at required levels to prevent machine downtime. This position assists with
inventory control, stock replenishment, tool allocation, purchasing support, receiving, record keeping, and
communication with production, engineering, supply chain, and vendors. The role supports lean inventory practices,
budget control, and accurate Enterprise Resource Planning. Material Requirements Planning (ERP/MRP) system records.
Tooling Support Specialist Required Qualifications:
- Knowledge of basic computer programs, including Microsoft Excel and Word.
- Basic math skills and ability to work accurately with quantities, counts, and inventory data.
- Fluent English with clear verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with production, engineering, supply chain, maintenance, and other departments.
- Ability to learn and interpret basic engineering drawings and tooling specifications.
- Prior experience in tool crib, inventory control, manufacturing support, supply chain, or a related environment
- preferred.
- Associate degree in supply chain management, manufacturing, business, or related field preferred but not
- required.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel preferred.
- Ability to learn and effectively use ERP and/or MRP systems.
- Ability to use ERP reports and inventory data to support ordering decisions based on production needs.
- Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and ability to manage multiple tasks.
- Team-focused attitude and ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Basic negotiating and vendor communication skills preferred.
Tooling Support Specialist Specific Responsibilities:
- Assist with analyzing inventory reports, production schedules, and ERP/MRP system data to determine tooling and supply needs.
- Support placement of new orders through Supply Chain according to production requirements.
- Review tool crib inventory and identify replenishment needs.
- Perform stock inventory, cycle counts, and inventory audits.
- Replenish machine inventory and vending machine inventory as required.
- Assist with managing vending machine inventory in accordance with forecast, production schedule, and actual
- usage.
- Support organization and operation of the tool pre-setter room.
- Issue, receive, allocate, and distribute cutting tools, tool holders, and related manufacturing supplies.
- Track and report overages, shortages, damaged tools, abused tools, and unscheduled tooling requests.
- Issue Request for Quotation (RFQs) for tools and other procurement goods when assigned.
- Receive supplier bids, compare information, and support purchase recommendations.
- Follow up on incoming delivery times and maintain status of open purchase orders.
- Identify corrective action needs for defective, damaged, late, or unacceptable goods or services.
- Gather and report on supplier performance information as required.
- Expedite orders and communicate schedule changes or delivery issues to production and engineering.
- Maintain records of purchases, receipts, receiving logs, cycle counts, and inventory levels using ERP system
- records and approved documentation methods.
- Handle vendor correspondence related to tooling, delivery, pricing, and technical data requests.
- Provide technical data to suppliers as needed and as authorized by engineering or management.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe tool crib area.
- Follow company safety procedures, inventory control practices, and applicable manufacturing standards.
