JOB SCOPE: 

The Director of Accounting is a key financial leadership position responsible for overseeing the organization's accounting operations, treasury activities, financial reporting, and accounts payable functions. This role partners closely with the VP - Controller to ensure the integrity of financial information, maintain strong internal controls, optimize cash management practices, and support strategic business initiatives. The Director of Accounting leads the monthly and annual close processes, manages external audits, drives process improvements and automation initiatives, and develops a high-performing accounting team. This position requires a hands-on leader with strong technical accounting expertise, exceptional analytical skills, and a commitment to operational excellence.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Financial Reporting & Accounting Operations

  • Lead and manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes to ensure timely and accurate reporting.
  • Prepare and review financial statements and supporting schedules in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Ensure the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of the general ledger and related financial records.
  • Oversee journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, reclassifications, and variance analyses.
  • Monitor financial results and identify trends, risks, and opportunities affecting business performance.
  • Provide financial analysis and reporting to senior leadership to support decision-making.

Audit, Compliance & Internal Controls

  • Serve as the primary liaison for external auditors and lead the annual audit process from planning through completion.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal control environments to safeguard company assets and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Develop, document, and enforce accounting policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable accounting standards and reporting requirements.

Treasury & Cash Management

  • Partner with treasury operations to monitor daily cash positions, liquidity requirements, and banking activities.
  • Support cash forecasting, working capital management, and financial risk mitigation strategies.
  • Build and maintain effective banking relationships to support organizational growth and operational needs.
  • Assist in evaluating and implementing treasury management tools and processes.

Accounts Payable Leadership

  • Oversee the full accounts payable function, including invoice processing, approvals, vendor payments, and disbursement controls.
  • Ensure timely payment of obligations while optimizing cash flow and vendor relationships.
  • Maintain strong controls and compliance within all disbursement activities.

Leadership & Process Improvement

  • Lead, mentor, and develop accounting and accounts payable team members.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, and professional development.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline processes, improve efficiencies, and implement automation solutions across accounting and finance functions.
  • Support ERP enhancements, system implementations, and finance transformation initiatives.
  • Track departmental goals, key performance indicators, and progress toward financial and operational objectives.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & COMPETENCIES:

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and accounting best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex financial information and provide actionable business insights.
  • Proven experience leading accounting teams and developing talent.
  • Strong understanding of treasury management, cash flow forecasting, and banking operations.
  • Exceptional problem-solving, organizational, and decision-making abilities.
  • Strong attention to detail with a commitment to accuracy and compliance.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with the ability to influence across all levels of the organization.
  • Continuous improvement mindset with experience driving process optimization and automation.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: 

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related business discipline required.
  • CPA designation strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of progressive accounting and financial leadership experience.
  • Experience managing month-end closing, financial reporting, audits, treasury operations, and accounts payable functions.
  • Demonstrated success leading teams and implementing process improvements.
  • Experience within a multi-location or asset-intensive business environment preferred.

TECHNOLOGY SKILLS: 

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Experience with ERP systems required; ERP implementation experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience with BlackLine, Kyriba, and Visual Lease strongly preferred.
  • Ability to leverage technology and automation tools to improve efficiency and reporting accuracy.
