Job Description:

Engineering Tech Lead

About Upbound

Upbound Group (NASDAQ: UPBD) is a technology-driven platform company focused on expanding financial opportunity through innovative and inclusive solutions. Our brands—Rent-A-Center, Acima, and Brigit—serve customers across both digital and retail channels, with over 2,400 locations across the U.S., Mexico, and Puerto Rico. We’re headquartered in Plano, TX.

About the Role

We’re looking for an Engineering Tech Lead to join our Enterprise & Store Technology team. This is a hands-on leadership role where you’ll spend about 40–50% of your time coding, while also guiding the team on design, architecture, and delivery.

You’ll play a key role in driving end-to-end development, partnering closely with product and business teams, and ensuring we’re building scalable, high-quality solutions.

We’re also evolving how we build software—so we’re looking for someone who’s comfortable leveraging modern AI tools (like GitHub Copilot) and can help introduce smarter, more efficient ways of working across the engineering team.

What You’ll Be Doing

Delivery & Execution

  • Lead projects end-to-end—from design through deployment and production support
  • Drive code quality through reviews, best practices, and performance optimization
  • Ensure solutions are scalable, secure, and aligned with our architecture

Technical Leadership

  • Guide and mentor engineers, helping elevate overall team capability
  • Provide direction on design decisions and implementation approaches
  • Work across teams and vendors to ensure smooth integration and delivery

AI & Engineering Efficiency

  • Help the team adopt tools like GitHub Copilot and AI-assisted development tools
  • Look for opportunities to improve delivery speed through automation (testing, documentation, etc.)
  • Explore ways to incorporate AI-driven features into applications where it makes sense

Collaboration

  • Partner closely with product managers, designers, and stakeholders to translate business needs into technical solutions
  • Work with offshore teams and vendors to keep delivery on track
  • Help resolve dependencies and unblock teams quickly

Quality & Operations

  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues
  • Ensure applications perform reliably in production
  • Support releases, UAT, and continuous improvements post-launch

What We’re Looking For

Technical Skills

  • Strong full-stack development experience
    • Frontend: React or Angular
    • Backend: Node.js, Java, or Python
  • Experience building microservices and APIs (REST/JSON)
  • Strong background in cloud environments (AWS preferred)
  • Solid SQL and database experience

Leadership & Approach

  • Experience leading or mentoring engineers
  • Comfortable owning delivery from start to finish
  • Strong collaboration skills across technical and non-technical teams

Nice to Have

  • Experience using AI tools (Copilot, ChatGPT, etc.) in development workflows
  • Exposure to building data-driven or intelligent features
  • Background in retail or omni-channel environments

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 12+ years of experience in software development
  • 2+ years in a technical leadership role
  • Experience working in enterprise-scale, cloud-based environments

Work Authorization

Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S. (no sponsorship available).
