lumper is a manual laborer who specializes in loading and unloading goods from trucks, containers, or other vehicles, typically at warehouses, docks, or distribution centers. The role is physically demanding and requires strength, stamina, and attention to detail to ensure efficient and safe cargo handling 

Role Purpose

Lumpers move merchandise, materials, and equipment between vehicles and storage areas, ensuring goods are sorted, organized, and ready for distribution or storage. They may also pack, label, and inspect items to maintain quality and meet customer specifications 

Key Responsibilities

• Loading & Unloading: Transfer boxes, crates, pallets, and containers from trucks, ships, or trailers to warehouse floors or vice versa 

• Sorting & Segregation: Organize goods by type, destination, or SKU for efficient storage and retrieval 

• Palletizing: Stack and secure items on pallets using shrink wrap or other methods 

• Inventory Verification: Check delivered goods against packing lists or bills of lading for accuracy and damage 

• Equipment Operation: Use hand trucks, dollies, electric pallet jacks, or forklifts to move loads 

• Safety Compliance: Maintain a clean, organized loading area and follow all safety protocols 

Skills & Qualifications

• Physical Strength & Stamina: Ability to lift and carry heavy loads (often over 50 lbs) for extended periods 

• Organizational Skills: Efficiently sort and store goods to meet tight deadlines 

• Equipment Proficiency: Experience with pallet jacks or forklifts is preferred 

• Attention to Detail: Accurate sorting and verification to prevent errors 

• Work Ethic: Ability to work in a fast-paced, sometimes unpredictable environment
