Job Title: Security Officer
Reports To: Director of Security and Safety
Status:Â Full-Time, Non-ExemptÂ
Summary/objective
The Security Officer is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure campus environment through proactive patrol, response to incidents, and engagement with the campus community. This role supports the safety of students, faculty, staff, and visitors by enforcing college policies, responding to emergencies, and providing excellent customer service.
Essential functions

- Provide general campus security through vehicle patrol, foot patrol, and fixed post assignments.Â
- Respond to alarms, calls for service, and emergency situations in a timely manner.Â
- Detect, deter, and investigate unusual or suspicious activity.Â
- Provide information, assistance, and support to students, employees, and visitors.Â
- Observe and report violations of campus policies and applicable laws.Â
- Enforce college regulations, including motor vehicle and parking policies.Â
- Complete clear, accurate, and timely security incident reports.Â
- Deliver excellent customer service in all interactions.Â
- Provide first aid as needed, including use of AED and administering CPR.Â
- Respond to assignments as directed by dispatch or supervisory personnel.Â
- Identify, document, and report unsafe conditions; take corrective action when possible.Â
- Perform dispatching duties as assigned, including:Â
- Answering incoming callsÂ
- Monitoring cameras, access control, and fire systemsÂ
- Monitoring radio communicationsÂ
- Maintaining accountability for department propertyÂ
- Perform additional safety and security functions as directed.Â
Supervisory responsibilitiesÂ
The position of security officer does not have any direct reports.
Work environment
- Outdoor and indoor campus environment, including patrol of buildings, parking lots, and roadways.Â
- Exposure to varying weather conditions during patrol duties.Â
- Work may include evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.Â
- Occasional high-stress situations requiring quick decision-making.
Physical demands
- Extensive walking and standing for prolonged periods during foot patrols across campus, including buildings, stairwells, parking lots, and roadways.Â
- Ability to climb stairs, navigate uneven terrain, and move quickly between locations.Â
- Ability to respond rapidly to emergency situations, which may include running, bending, kneeling, or crouching.Â
- Ability to move 75 pounds and lift 40 pounds when necessary.Â
- Frequent use of hands for operating radios, computers, and other security equipment.Â
- Visual and auditory acuity sufficient to observe surroundings, monitor security systems, and respond to alarms and incidents.Â
- Ability to work in varying environmental conditions, including outdoor weather extremes such as heat, cold, rain, or snow.
Travel requiredÂ
The security officer position doesn’t require travel other than local movement throughout campus.
Required education and experience
- High school diploma or GED
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a security officer, police officer, firefighter, or related fieldÂ
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in order to complete reports, understand instructions, and respond to emergency situations
- Valid New York State driver’s licenseÂ
- Current New York State security guard certificationÂ
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervisionÂ
- Basic computer skills, including email, report writing systems, and online training platformsÂ
- Ability to effectively respond to emergency situations with urgency and sound judgment
Preferred education and experience
- Some college coursework or military experienceÂ
- Prior experience in a higher education or campus settingÂ
- CPR/AED certificationÂ
