Quality Systems and Food Safety Supervisor


Zentis is Europe's number one fruit processing company and one of the leading brand manufacturers of jams, sweets and custard-based desserts. The Company's North American operations are in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Plymouth, Indiana, where we produce fruit and dairy preparations for a variety of customers including yogurt, ice cream and bakery manufacturers.

 

As a Quality Systems and Food Safety Supervisor you will supervise and coordinate daily food safety operations to ensure compliance with food safety standards, policies, and regulations. Oversee sanitation programs, product testing, and inspection schedules to maintain product integrity and prevent contamination. Train and mentor staff on food safety and quality assurance protocols and safe handling procedures. Investigate food safety incidents and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence. Collaborate with other departments, such as production and quality assurance, to maintain a safe and compliant facility environment. Provide support to QA Manager in implementing quality programs. Will provide sufficient resources and support to grow an increasingly positive food safety culture.

 

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership, coordination, insight and individual contribution in obtaining and maintaining GFSI (SQF) program and FSMA compliance 
  • Serve as designated Safe Quality Foods (SQF) Practitioner and Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI)
  • Conduct routine audits of internal food safety program, product specifications, providing reports to management for continuous improvement.
  • Direct and lead activities related to audits (customer and third-party) to include:
    • Customer audits
    • Pre-audit questionnaires
    • Customer requirement reviews
    • Corrective Action audit
  • Monitor products and processes to ensure on-going product and service quality.  Recommend changes where needed to resolve quality issues by applying A4 or other LEAN Manufacturing techniques for finding root causes and recommend changes to internal Operations when needed.
  • Develop, train and coach the Quality Microbiology team.   Ensure that roles and responsibilities are clear and communicated to all team members.   Direct and assist the daily laboratory work; manage the activities of Quality Technicians.
  • Assist Quality Manager in developing and implementing a comprehensive food safety and quality system program.  Elements include (but not limited to):
  • Policies, procedures, training, controls, testing, measurements, corrective actions, document control, reporting, and continuous improvement.   
  • The scope covers all ingredients and finished products
  • Ensure timely response to customers on all quality concerns by coordinating return of defective materials, leading incident investigations by root cause analysis, and creating corrective and preventive action plans.   Provide written reports and summaries for the customer.
  • Take charge of critical food-safety and quality issues and promptly bring them to resolution while maintaining adherence to legislative and regulatory requirements.

 

Formal Education Required:

  • BS in Food Science, Process Engineering, Food Processing, Food Engineering or related scientific field or equivalent work experience.


Specific Experience and Key Knowledge Requirements:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of food processing and quality assurance experience.  
  • Knowledge of aseptic and non-sterile, conventional food processes, HACCP, and cGMP- preferred.  
  • Knowledge of fruit preps, frozen desserts, food service, and bakery filling applications are a plus.    


Special Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Ability to communicate effectively internally and with customers and suppliers.  
  • Interpersonal skills to align efforts across departments to motivate and drive improvement. 
  • Proficiency in SAP or similar ERP system, Microsoft Office Applications and Quality Management Systems.  
  • Ideal candidate would have working knowledge of root cause analysis and corrective and preventive action planning.
  • HACCP, PCQI, and/or Better Process School Certifications are a plus
