Position Summary

The Phlebotomist is responsible for performing venipuncture and capillary blood collection procedures in a fast-paced outpatient clinic environment. This role supports providers by ensuring accurate specimen collection, proper processing, and timely transport to the laboratory while delivering excellent patient care and maintaining compliance with all California regulatory standards. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong technical skills, professionalism, and the ability to manage high patient volumes efficiently.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform venous and capillary blood draws for patients of all ages, including pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations.
  • Verify patient identity and orders prior to specimen collection using established protocols.
  • Prepare patients for procedures, explain the process, and ensure comfort and safety during collection.
  • Accurately label, process, centrifuge, and prepare specimens for transport or courier pickup.
  • Follow proper order of draw and specimen handling requirements to ensure integrity of samples.
  • Document collections and results accurately in the electronic health record (EHR) and/or laboratory information system (LIS).
  • Maintain efficient patient flow to support clinic schedules and minimize wait times.
  • Coordinate with providers, medical assistants, and front office staff regarding stat or urgent lab needs.
  • Monitor and restock phlebotomy and laboratory supplies.
  • Adhere to infection control standards and OSHA safety guidelines for bloodborne pathogens.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the laboratory and draw stations.
  • Provide professional, courteous customer service to all patients and staff.
  • Assist with additional clinical or administrative duties within scope, as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program
  • Active California Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT I or CPT II) license required
  • Current CPR/BLS certification preferred

Experience

  • Minimum 1 year of phlebotomy experience preferred
  • Outpatient or ambulatory care experience strongly preferred
  • Experience with high-volume patient settings is a plus

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of venipuncture techniques, specimen requirements, and laboratory procedures
  • Understanding of CDPH, CLIA, OSHA, and HIPAA regulations
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced clinical environment
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively
  • Basic computer and EHR proficiency

  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds
  • Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and clinical environments
