Auxiliary Health Clerk (Environmental Health Services – Beach Sampling)

Make a Difference Where It Matters Most
Oakland County Health Division is seeking a compassionate, detail-oriented Auxiliary Health Clerk to support essential public health services delivered in community-based settings throughout the county. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys helping people, thrives in a team environment, and is interested in public health and the environment.
As an Auxiliary Health Clerk, you’ll play a key support role in ensuring residents receive timely, accurate, and welcoming public health services—often serving as one of the first points of contact for the community.
What You’ll Do
In this hands-on, people-centered role, you will:
• Receive necessary training to support the Oakland County Inland Beach Monitoring program
• Conduct field visits to complete surveys of environmental conditions at beaches.
• Collect recreational water samples for laboratory analysis
• Enter beach waters wearing waterproof waders, as needed, to obtain samples
• Record inspection findings and public health code violations following established guidelines
• Receive and document public health complaints from staff, business owners, and residents via phone, email, and in person
• Conduct minor laboratory and screening tests as assigned
• Communicate with clients and provide information, appointment scheduling, and follow-up
• Assist with organizing and distributing health education materials
• Maintain accurate records, files, reports, and data using Countywide and department-specific software
• Assist professional staff with routine regulatory and compliance activities following established guidelines
• Participate in staff meetings, in-service education, and selected task forces as appropriate
• Inventory supplies and support the beach monitoring program

Minimum Qualifications
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
A. REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. Possess an Associate’s Degree or equivalent education from an accredited college or university with coursework in Journalism, English, Psychology, Sociology, Early Childhood Education or closely related areas; OR
2. Have Merit System status in any classification and be currently employed in the Health & Human Services Department; AND
a. Have successfully completed at least the equivalent of one (1) year of college at an accredited college or university with coursework in Journalism, English, Psychology, Sociology, Early Childhood Education, or closely related areas; AND
b. Have two (2) years of full‑time work experience in the Oakland County Health & Human Services Department conducting or assisting in various para‑professional health assignments and activities requiring considerable knowledge and a thorough understanding of the various elements involved.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists professional public health employees at various locations throughout Oakland County.
Assists and provides information concerning available services and procedures to persons visiting or seeking aid at the Health Division.
At clinic/conference sites, may conduct routine laboratory tests, screening tests and/or performs selected physical measurements (e.g., height, weight, head circumference) as assigned.
Provides prior authorization screening for services.
Provides follow‑up regarding client services.
Follows‐up on selected children referred from programs to assure medical attention is provided for their problem.
Assists in organizing health education materials and audio‑visual aids and displays.
Participates in agency task force when appropriate.
Attends selected staff meetings and supervisory group meetings.
Attends staff meetings and in‑service education offerings for public health nursing groups.
Makes appointments for various services, codes visits, separates and organizes reports, maintains files and records, inventories supplies, and performs a variety of associated duties.
Assists professional staff in routine licensing and regulatory procedures.
Following established guidelines, assists professional staff in monitoring local agency management information system reports by reviewing computations.
Assists professional staff in monitoring local agency contract compliance following established guidelines.
Assists professional staff in ensuring the accuracy and appropriateness of reports and data generated at both the local and central agency level following established procedures.
Assists the public by providing referrals and information such as phone numbers and locations of agencies.
Utilizes current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.
ESSENTIAL MENTAL & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to communicate accurately to convey information.
Ability to operate and/or utilize typical office and medical office equipment and supplies.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in a typical office/medical laboratory setting.
May participate in activities that require driving or being a passenger in an automobile.

1. Previous work experience with the general public either as a volunteer or an employee.
2. Pursuing college study leading to a degree in Public Health, Psychology, Nursing, Sociology, Social Work, or associated areas.
3. Reasonable knowledge of social needs, habits, and characteristics of behavior.
4. Reasonable ability to counsel, instruct and control people.
5. Reasonable ability to follow oral and written instructions.
6. Reasonable ability to prepare routine reports.
7. Reasonable ability to cope with challenging situations requiring immediate decisions in accordance with department policies and objectives.
8. Reasonable ability to develop and maintain effective communications with people.
9. Familiar with current word processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail, and Internet software.
C. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Employees of this class must submit to immunizations as required by the Health Division and submit to a tuberculin skin test or chest x‑ray, at County expense, once a year.
