Oakland County Government – Health Division Laboratory

Where Science Meets Public Health Impact

Oakland County Health Division is seeking a highly skilled Medical Technologist to join our public health laboratory team. In this role, you’ll perform high-complexity laboratory testing that directly supports disease surveillance, outbreak response, environmental health, and community protection.

This position is ideal for a certified MT/MLS professional who values precision, quality, and the opportunity to contribute to public health preparedness and response, including pandemic and bioterrorism readiness.

What You’ll Do
Under general supervision and in accordance with CLIA and laboratory policies, you will:
• Perform high-complexity laboratory testing authorized by the Laboratory Director
• Follow established procedures for specimen handling, processing, testing, reporting, and documentation
• Accurately perform testing across multiple laboratory disciplines, including:
•Molecular diagnostics
•Serology
•Chemistry and toxicology
•Microbiology
•Environmental laboratory analysis
• Conduct and successfully complete CLIA Proficiency Testing
• Adhere to laboratory Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) policies
• Document QC activities, analyzer maintenance, calibrations, and corrective actions
• Identify testing or instrumentation issues and independently resolve them or escalate to the Laboratory Supervisor
• Utilize Countywide and department-specific laboratory information and data systems
• Provide instruction and oversight to laboratory interns and students

Minimum Qualifications

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS & ABILITIES

A.           REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Possess a Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university.

NOTE: Applicants possessing transcripts from a college or university outside of the United States will be required to provide documentation of degree equivalency from a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (http://naces.org/members.html). The degree evaluation will be required for application processing.

Be board Certified as MT or MLS from ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists).

3.                           a.            Successfully completed a NAACLS accredited Medical Laboratory Internship within the last five years; OR

               b.            Have had two (2) years of full-time work experience in a clinical laboratory.

4.            Pass the complete examination, including the employment medical, established for this classification.

5.            Successfully complete the six-month probationary period.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Provides instruction and oversight to the laboratory's interns and students.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Performs high complexity tests that are authorized by the laboratory director.  These tests require a degree of skill commensurate with the technologist's training and experience.

Follows the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling, specimen processing and testing, reporting results, and maintaining records of patient test results. 

Successfully performs Proficiency Testing for Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) purposes.

Adheres to laboratory's Quality Control policies.  Documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and all analyzer maintenance performed.

Follows the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable level of performance.

Is capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results, and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the Laboratory Supervisor. 

Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.

Utilizes current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.

Accurately, precisely, and competently performs testing in the following locations:

WITHIN THE HEALTH DIVISION NORTH OFFICE LABORATORY

Molecular:  Test of NATT using Hologic Panther analyzer.

Urine drug testing, rapid HIV, Covid, and syphilis testing.

Microbiology:  Cultures, gram stains, wet mounts, molecular testing.

Environmental laboratory analysis:  Water bacteriology, wet chemistry by Ion Chromatography and metals testing on analyzer, wastewater testing for Covid.

Functions as a Reference Laboratory in the Laboratory Response Network (LRN) established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Health & Human Services to assist local laboratories and clinics in the event of a bioterrorism incident or pandemic outbreak.

Conducts QPCR testing on Oakland County beach samples.

              

Performs additional tests as assigned.

Utilizes current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.

WITHIN THE HEALTH DIVISION SOUTH OFFICE LABORATORY

Syphilis Serology Testing:  VDRL’s, TP-PA.

Microbiology:  Cultures, gram stains, wet mounts.

Performs additional tests as assigned.

Utilizes current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.

ESSENTIAL MENTAL & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to effectively communicate to accurately convey information.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in a typical medical laboratory environment.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  The primary purpose of this job description is to set a fair and equitable salary range for this job classification.  Generally, only those key duties necessary for proper job evaluation and/or labor market analysis have been included. 1.            Considerable ability to perform difficult tests and successfully interpret results.

2.            Considerable knowledge in use of laboratory apparatus.

3.            Considerable knowledge and ability in applying safety procedures when handling chemicals and other laboratory equipment.

4.            Reasonable ability to organize and thoroughly document all examinations performed.

5.            Reasonable ability to present evidence and findings in a clear, concise manner both verbally and in writing.

6.            Reasonable ability to utilize current word processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail, and Internet software.

C.           SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must submit to immunizations as required by the Department of Health & Human Services and to periodic tuberculin skin tests or chest x-rays at County expense.

Must maintain current MT or MLS (ASCP) certification.
