Strengthening and empowering all of the communities we serve.

The Oregonian/OregonLive seeks an experienced Content Supervisor to oversee our Express News reporters, who sit at the center of our daily news operation, and to assist in leading the broader Public Safety Team.

The Express team covers breaking crime and community news while also diving deep into the explanatory and narrative pieces that help readers understand the events unfolding across our metro area. The Public Safety team ensures we provide the deepest available coverage of crime and the criminal justice system, including holding people and institutions accountable to the authority they wield.

Reporting to the Public Safety/Express editor, this supervisor is primarily responsible for day-to-day oversight of the Express group — keeping breaking coverage moving while helping reporters carve out time for deeper work.

The salary range for this role is $65,000-$80,000 annually.

This role will require reliable transportation to meet with sources and cover breaking news and events.

What you'll be doing:

  • Drive daily reporting by assigning, editing and publishing breaking news with speed, accuracy and strong news judgment, guiding iterative updates as stories develop.
  • Steer explanatory and narrative work by coaching reporters to identify the stories that merit deeper digging and to deliver pieces that give readers context and a human perspective on events in the metro area.
  • Develop staff to draw out the best work from a talented mix of early-career and experienced journalists.
  • Provide direct feedback that sharpens reporting, writing, sourcing and story framing.
  • Bring creativity by encouraging smart risk-taking in story forms and in how we convey information to readers, including responsible use of emerging tools.
  • Share coverage planning and shift coordination with the Public Safety/Express editor, and step in to keep the team running smoothly when needed.

Our ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • At least one year of management experience or 3+ years of professional newsroom experience with demonstrated leadership skills, including editing
  • Strong understanding of best practices in digital journalism, including effective presentation and headlines.
  • Strong news judgment and a clear sense for stories: what matters now, what will matter next, and what deserves more attention.
  • Calm, confident leadership in fast-moving situations; high standards for accuracy, fairness and urgency.
  • Prior experience coaching journalists to do their best work will give you a head start
  • A strong understanding of public records and data, and how they can elevate both breaking and enterprise coverage is a plus
