Overview

The Tax Director provides strategic leadership and oversight for the firm’s internal tax function, including federal, state, local, partnership, and individual tax compliance for the firm and its owners. This role is responsible for establishing tax strategy, ensuring effective tax governance, managing risk, and advising finance and firm leadership on complex tax matters. The Tax Director leads planning, reporting, compliance, research, and process improvement efforts to ensure accurate, timely, and well-controlled tax operations across the organization.

 

Travel Expectations: This role requires minimal travel, less than 10% per year. 

You Will

  • Provide strategic direction for the firm’s internal tax function, including tax compliance, planning, reporting, research, and risk management.
  • Monitor emerging tax legislation and regulatory developments, proactively advising firm leadership on compliance requirements, risk exposure, and planning opportunities resulting from changes in tax law.
  • Oversee sales and use tax, property tax, and other indirect tax compliance activities, ensuring accurate filings, payments, registrations, and reporting across applicable jurisdictions.
  • Maintain expert knowledge of federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations, ensuring compliance, managing risk, and advising firm leadership on tax-related matters.
  • Oversee preparation and filing of federal, state, local, and other required tax returns for the firm and its owners.
  • Lead partnership tax matters, including allocations, distributions, capital account considerations, basis calculations, and related reporting requirements.
  • Advise Finance and firm leadership on complex tax matters, regulatory changes, tax planning opportunities, and potential risk areas.
  • Establish and maintain tax policies, procedures, controls, calendars, and documentation standards to support accurate and timely compliance.
  • Oversee multi-state tax compliance, including registrations, filings, estimated payments, notices, and related requirements across applicable jurisdictions.
  • Lead tax forecasting, quarterly provisions, estimated tax planning, and other recurring tax reporting processes.
  • Manage responses to tax authority inquiries, audits, notices, and information requests.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders to evaluate tax implications of business decisions, ownership changes, transactions, and operational changes.
  • Develop, mentor, and provide direction to tax team members and other Finance staff supporting tax-related work.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Provides leadership, direction, coaching, and performance feedback to tax team members and may supervise other finance staff supporting tax-related activities.

You Have

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; Master’s degree in Taxation, Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred.
  • CPA strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive tax experience, including significant experience with partnership taxation, individual taxation, and multi-state compliance.
  • Experience leading tax strategy, tax compliance, tax planning, and tax risk management within a complex organization or professional services environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to advise senior leaders on complex tax matters and translate technical tax concepts into practical business guidance.
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations.

Compensation Details

The base salary range targeted for this role is $190,000 - $210,000.  This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus based on factors such as company and personal performance.  This salary range represents BerryDunn’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. If an applicant possesses experience, education, or other qualifications more than the minimum requirements for this posting, that applicant is encouraged to apply, and a final salary range may then be based on those additional qualifications; compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to years of experience, depth of experience, seniority, merit, education, training, amount of travel, and other relevant business considerations.
