Position Title: YouthLine Volunteer and Youth Development Coordinator  

Status:  Full-time/ Non-exempt  

Reports to: YouthLine Deputy Director of Youth Development, Training, and Quality Assurance 

Work Schedule: This position will typically work 12:00pm-8:00pm PST, five days per week. This is a hybrid role requiring four days in office and one remote work from home day. 

Compensation: $24 – 29.17/hour. See breakdown below. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance. Matching 401k, access to professional development funds, short- and long-term disability, licensure supervision at no cost to the employee, PSLF repayment, an employee assistance program, and a free Fitbit. Also, a $2/hr differential for employees who possess a Master's degree in a related field, a 2% differential for employees who live and work from Oregon, and a $1/hr. differential for hours worked in the office when regularly working in the office 3 days per week.

  

About YouthLine: YouthLine is a free peer-to-peer help, support, and crisis line for youth ages 10-24. For over 20 years, the YouthLine has helped support the mental wellness of young people, prevent youth suicide, and change culture around mental wellbeing through peer-to-peer mental health support. Teen and young adult volunteers and interns receive extensive training to serve as peer Crisis Intervention Specialists for other youth and are supervised by educated clinicians with extensive crisis experience. The peer experience is critical: youth best understand the experience of their peers because they are living the same experience, uniquely situating them to provide meaningful, impactful support for youth in crisis.

 

Volunteer and Youth Development Coordinator Position Summary: The Volunteer and Youth Development Coordinator recruits, trains, schedules, mentors, supports, and coaches youth and young adult volunteers and interns for Lines for Life’s peer-to-peer YouthLine. Goals of this role include maintaining information for and coordinating and scheduling of volunteers, while improving volunteer retention, recruiting volunteers from varied communities, and coaching youth and young adult volunteers.

 

Volunteer and Youth Development Coordinator Responsibilities:  

Recruitment and Training

  • Recruit youth and young adult volunteers and interns for the YouthLine through online and in-person methods to include underrepresented and underserved communities.
  • Pursue opportunities to build capacity through community partnerships and internship opportunities
  • Collaborate with the Youth Development team across sites to screen applications
  • Assist with coordinating the logistics of crisis intervention trainings for YouthLine volunteers across sites (orientation, interviews, training, shadows)
  • Assist and support in YouthLine Peer Crisis Intervention Specialist Training across sites (to include training week attendance and leading shadow shifts as needed)
  • Collaborate with the Outreach team to develop and update volunteer marketing materials (digital and paper)

Operations

  • Collect and maintain current information for all volunteers (contact information, relevant forms, background checks, etc)
  • Schedule volunteers (training, shadows, weekly shift coverage, monthly meetings, continuing education, etc)
  • Communicate important information to volunteers in a timely manner
  • Collect data relevant to YouthLine (volunteer recruitment and retention, demographic information, volunteer satisfaction, etc); identify and analyze trends, and assist with regular and ad-hoc reports for YouthLine

Collaboration and Development 

  • Systematically check in with volunteers, with a focus on youth mental health and wellness. Offer support and connect with external resources as necessary (parents, therapists, schools, etc)
  • Attend Clinical Supervision meetings for insight and information sharing related to supporting volunteers, to include volunteer performance and concerns 
  • Chaperone youth volunteers during external meetings (events, interviews, etc)
  • Collaborate with Youth Development team to create and implement a YouthLine volunteer recognition program to identify trends and implement processes as needed for YouthLine retention
  • Collaborate with Youth Development team to create and implement volunteer feedback methods and assist in incorporating youth feedback across YL departments
  • Collaborate with Youth Development team to implement the YouthLine’s youth development and mentoring plan, offering ideas for improvement where needed
  • Provide staff support to Youth Development and Empowerment Committees (ex: Legislative, Equity, Continuing education)
  • Plan and facilitate monthly meetings, retreat, and in-services with the support of Youth Development team
  • Collaborate with the YL Asst Dir of Youth Dev to create an infrastructure to support increased volunteer base and capacity building
  • Collaborate with the Outreach/ education team to use social media and notification systems consistently and creatively to connect with potential volunteers and support in youth centered content creation

Other duties

  • Participate in contact taking shifts on the YouthLine monthly to maintain skill set 
  • Assist in Quality Assurance activities to include contact monitoring and volunteer skill coaching 
  • Support in Youth Development Program tasks 
  • Perform other duties as needed for program success 

Volunteer and Youth Development Coordinator Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field. 
  • At least 2 years’ experience working with youth. 
  • Crisis intervention knowledge and skills. 
  • Strong networking skills and recruiting skills. 
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Strong training, coaching, and mentoring skills. Able to provide constructive feedback. 
  • Able to work with diverse groups of people and establish rapport with youth and parents.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills and ability to think systematically to coordinate complex schedules and prioritize various tasks.
  • Strong ability to multitask.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to effectively use social media to communicate. 
  • Proficiency in a web-based computer environment. 
  • Ability to stay calm when handling stressful situations.
  • Report to work, meetings, training, and job-related activities prepared and as scheduled.

 Volunteer and Youth Development Coordinator Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience recruiting a large number of staff and/or volunteers. 
  • Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), safeTALK, and Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) certifications preferred. 
  • Experience working in a call center environment. 

Volunteer and Youth Development Coordinator Work Schedule: This position will typically work 12:00p-8:00p PST, five days per week, 40 hours total. This position requires the ability to adjust work hours to meet the needs of the program, to include collaboration with colleagues, interns, and volunteers; attend and facilitate meetings and trainings; engage in contact taking shifts; supporting volunteers and interns on shift; and addressing other emerging organizational needs. This is a hybrid role requiring four days in office and one remote work from home day. 

This is a union position with a step progression based upon years of service at Lines for Life, and below is the current step scale:

Compensation Information: 

<3 years: $24.00

3-5 years: $25.20

5-7 years: $26.46

7-10 years: $27.78

>10 years: $29.17

*$2 increase per hour for Masters in a related field, $1 per hour for LPC/LCSW or similar credentials.
