Position: Seeking a Medical Director to join our Outpatient Behavioral Health Team in the beautiful Mid-Hudson Valley. In this role, the Medical Director will provide leadership to the medical staff across all agency New York State-licensed outpatient behavioral health centers, in coordination with and under the supervision of the Vice President for Behavioral Health. The Medical Director also leads and partners with a multi-disciplinary team of Psychiatrists, Psych NPs, Licensed Clinicians, and RNs to support our community members right to thrive. This position requires in-person and hybrid work. 

Salary: $350,000 - $375,000 annually based on experience

Status: Full-Time, Hybrid, Permanent, Mon-Fri, 40 hours per week

Reports To: Vice President for Behavioral Health

Location: Dutchess and Ulster counties

  • Family Services Behavioral Health Centers are eligible for the Substance Use Disorder Treatment and Recovery Loan Repayment Program (STAR LRP) through the federal Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA). This is a program where an employee’s student loan repayment funds are provided in exchange for a commitment to work at a STAR LRP approved facility for a certain number of years. Applications are typically available once per year and are subject to availability and need.
  • Additional opportunities for Student Loan Repayment programs may be available as federal and state funding allows. 

 

In this role you will provide leadership to the medical staff across all agency New York State-licensed outpatient behavioral health centers, in coordination with and under the supervision of the Vice President for Behavioral Health. This full-time position allocates approximately 75% to leadership/administrative responsibilities, and 25% to clinical time. As a senior leader, the Medical Director oversees and advances standards of clinical care across the agency’s community-based behavioral health services. This scope includes services for individuals across the lifespan, beginning at age 3, as well as substance use harm reduction and medication-assisted treatment within the agency’s OMH-licensed behavioral health programs. The role also includes responsibility for the management and oversight of AOT clients, including related forensic obligations.
 

Leadership Responsibility: The Medical Director serves as a key organizational leader by providing guidance and mentorship to clinical staff, fostering collaboration across multidisciplinary teams, and promoting a culture of excellence, integrity, and compassion. This role participates actively in organizational decision-making, contributes to the development of clinical and operational policies, and supports quality improvement and expansion initiatives. As a strong leader the Medical Director is committed to inspiring and motivating staff through change and challenge. They ensure appropriate medical supervision for all medical staff and serve as a clinical resource to the broader interdisciplinary team. The Medical Director also represents the agency in external partnerships and community engagement efforts, ensuring alignment with the agency’s mission and values.

Qualifications:

Required:

· MD or DO with current, unrestricted New York State medical license

· Board Certified or Board Eligible in Psychiatry (ABPN)

· DEA registration and eligibility for Medicare/Medicaid enrollment

· A minimum of five years of post-residency clinical experience in psychiatry, with demonstrated leadership or supervisory responsibility

Preferred:

· 5+ years of leadership experience in behavioral health settings

· Experience overseeing multi-site or system-level outpatient programs

· Strong knowledge of New York State OMH regulations and Article 31 programs

· Experience in community mental health or nonprofit settings

· Demonstrated experience in quality improvement, clinical governance, or regulatory compliance

· Experience working with AOT populations or forensic behavioral health systems

 

Position Responsibilities:

Clinical & Medical Oversight

· Establishes, implements, and maintains standards of psychiatric care and clinical practice across all agency Article 31 behavioral health clinics
· Provides clinical psychiatric services and serves as back-up for other Psychiatrists/Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners.
· Provides clinical consultation and guidance to interdisciplinary staff on psychiatric care.
· Provides oversight and develops Medication Formulary.
· Ensures appropriate clinical supervision and oversight of psychiatric services across programs, in collaboration with clinical leadership
· Responsible for management and oversight of AOT clients, including related forensic obligations

People Leadership & Workforce Management
· Directly supervises Associate Medical Director and Nursing leadership.
· Assists in the recruitment and ongoing evaluation of Psychiatrists/Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners, and RNs.
· In conjunction with the respective clinical directors, responsible for ensuring that all medical staff meet productivity goals as established by Agency Leadership. Quality,

Compliance, & Risk Management
· Provides and recommends to the VP for Behavioral Health and other senior leadership members procedures for the establishment, maintenance, and improvement of standards, protocols and policies for all OMH licensed centers.
· Serves as a member of The Quality Improvement Committee and Clinical Incident Review Committee.
· Develops Medical procedures for the behavioral health services.

System & Strategic Leadership
· Serves as Medical Director of Behavioral Health Division of Family Services, providing system-wide clinical leadership across all agency Article 31 clinics
· Partners with Agency leadership and direct care staff to design, improve, and expand behavioral health services
· Contributes to organizational strategy, planning, and performance across programs · Leads or supports program expansion and enhancements, including motivating staff and utilizing change management principles effectively.
· Participates in various staff and committee meetings to ensure alignment, coordination, and system consistency Education & Organizational Leadership
· Conducts education and training seminars for behavioral health staff on relevant medical and psychiatric concerns in behavioral health services.
· Chairs medical staff meetings.
· Acts as an ambassador for the agency and advances FSI’s mission and values within the organization and to external stakeholders.

Administrative & General
· Assumes responsibility for medical program productivity and budget oversight.
· Attend and actively participate in Leadership Meetings.
· Participates in organizational decision making and leads initiatives accordingly.
· Does related work as required.
· Other duties as assigned.


Skills and Abilities:

· Demonstrated clinical expertise in psychiatry and evidence-based behavioral health care

· Strong leadership skills, with the ability to supervise, mentor, and develop clinical staff

· Familiarity with New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) regulations and Article 31 programs, or the ability to quickly develop subject matter expertise

· Strategic thinking with the ability to support system-level initiatives and service expansion

· Experience with quality improvement, risk management, and clinical best practices

· Ability to collaborate effectively across interdisciplinary teams and with senior leadership

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence and engage diverse stakeholders

· Commitment to person-centered, recovery-oriented care, and alignment with NYS MHOTRS values

· Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) and use of data to inform clinical and operational decision-making

· Strong organizational and administrative skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities across a multi-site system

· Effective time management skills and ability to balance clinical, administrative, and leadership responsibilities
 

Essential Requirements

· Ability to travel to agency locations across three counties (Dutchess, Ulster, Orange) on an as needed basis.

· Must be eligible for NY state Medicaid and Medicare.

· NYS medical license.

· ABPM Board Certification Required
