Peer Recovery Support Specialist – Substance Use Disorder (SUD)

As a Peer Recovery Support Specialist, you'll use your lived experience to encourage, mentor, and empower individuals working toward recovery. You'll serve as a trusted advocate, helping people navigate challenges, build confidence, and connect with the resources they need to achieve lasting wellness.

What You'll Do

  • Build supportive, recovery-focused relationships with individuals receiving services.
  • Encourage hope by sharing your lived recovery experience in a professional and meaningful way.
  • Facilitate peer support and recovery groups.
  • Assist individuals in identifying personal goals and developing strategies to achieve them.
  • Connect individuals with community resources, treatment services, housing, employment, education, and other supports.
  • Provide advocacy, encouragement, and crisis support as appropriate.
  • Support individuals in developing healthy coping skills and daily living skills.
  • Offer guidance in balancing important life roles such as employee, parent, student, or caregiver.
  • Provide supportive services including transportation, medication reminders, and assistance with daily living activities as appropriate.
  • Complete required documentation accurately and timely.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Lived experience in recovery from a substance use disorder.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of continuous sobriety required.
  • State or nationally recognized Peer Recovery Support Specialist certification or training as required by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Services (DoHS).
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and advocacy skills.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries while using lived experience to support others.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One (1) year of experience working with individuals affected by substance use disorders.
  • Knowledge of recovery-oriented systems of care and community resources.
  • Experience facilitating peer support groups or recovery programming.
