Required Degree:Ā Terminal degree (Ph.D., MD, etc.) in a relevant field with substantial anatomy teaching and cadaveric dissection experience. The required degree must be completed by the start date.

ExpertiseĀ inĀ cadaveric dissection andĀ at least 5 years of managing a professional school anatomy laboratory.Ā

Job Summary:
The Anatomy Laboratory Director provides academic and administrative leadership for the anatomy laboratoryĀ under the direction of the Anatomy Thread Leader. This faculty role ensures excellence in anatomy education, laboratory operations, safety, andĀ cadaver-donorĀ stewardship. The Director oversees all aspects of lab function, including instructional support, personnel management, facilities, and regulatory compliance, while actively contributing to the medical curriculum through teaching and collaboration with faculty.Ā
This position is critical to the success of the BYU School of Medicine, a new organization within the university. As the school continues to launch and grow, a successful candidate mustĀ demonstrateĀ adaptability and a willingness to take on evolving responsibilities and assignments to support its effective implementation and ongoing operations.
Duties/Expectations:Ā
Instruction & Academic LeadershipĀ
Ensure that dissection,Ā teaching,Ā and lab-based assessments are coordinated with each of the organ system blocks under the direction of the Anatomy Thread Leader.
Ensures anatomical content is aligned with learningĀ objectivesĀ and assessment strategies.Ā
Participates in teaching activities, including dissection,Ā prosection-based instruction, small-group sessions, and simulation-based learning.Ā
Oversees the development and quality ofĀ prosectionsĀ and other instructional materials.Ā
Collaborates with faculty to support theĀ creationĀ and implementation of laboratory assessments, including quizzes, examinations, and practical sessions.
Oversees the grading of anatomy lab assessments.Ā EntersĀ student scores into the learning management system.
Oversees the use and maintenance of audiovisual and instructional technology within the anatomy lab.Ā
Schedules the anatomy lab space,Ā staffĀ and faculty for allĀ schoolĀ ofĀ medicineĀ educational activities.Ā Ā
Administration & OperationsĀ
Provides strategic direction and day-to-day leadership for anatomy laboratory operations.Ā
Manages laboratory facilities, including equipment, storage systems, ventilation, and instructional technology.Ā
Oversees procurement, inventory, and maintenance of consumables,Ā dissectionĀ instruments, PPE,Ā preservationĀ chemicals, and teaching resources.Ā
Supervises theĀ anatomyĀ laboratoryĀ staffĀ (TAās, etc.).
Ensures efficient workflow and operational support for teaching, research, andĀ cadaver-donorĀ program activities.Ā
ManagesĀ cadaver-donorĀ program operations, including tracking, chain-of-custody documentation, regulatory compliance, and oversight ofĀ cadaver-donorĀ delivery, storage, placement, and preparation.Ā
Ensures the respectful, ethical, andĀ appropriate useĀ ofĀ cadavericĀ donors throughout all instructional activities.Ā
Working in conjunction with theĀ AnatomyĀ ThreadĀ Leader,Ā directĀ an annual body donation memorial service.Ā
Compliance & SafetyĀ
Ensures full compliance with OSHA regulations, chemical hygiene standards, hazardous waste protocols, and institutional safety policies.Ā
Develops, implements, andĀ maintainsĀ standard operating procedures (SOPs), safety guidelines, and emergency response plans.Ā
Collaborates with Environmental Health & Safety and Risk Management offices to support institutional safety initiatives.Ā
Provides training for faculty, staff, and students in safe anatomical laboratory practices and proper use of PPE.Ā
Conducts routine inspections andĀ maintainsĀ documentation to support internal audits and external regulatory reviews.Ā
Upholds the highest standards of respect, confidentiality, and professionalism in allĀ cadaverĀ donor-related activities.Ā
