About TaxHawk

TaxHawk, Inc. is the company behind FreeTaxUSA, one of the most trusted and widely used online tax preparation platforms in the country. We help millions of Americans prepare and file their taxes accurately and affordably every year. As we continue to grow, we're building our in-house software engineering team to support the full range of our business and product needs.

This is an entry-level role. You'll be paired with a senior engineer for training.

What you'll do

  • Write and ship Java code in our Micronaut microservices, starting with well-scoped work and taking on more as you get your footing
  • Use AI tooling every day — Claude Code / Copilot/ Cursor, on the company tab — and build judgment about when it's helping and when it's confidently wrong
  • Build and maintain unit and integration tests for logic where being right matters
  • Work on new and older systems that have been supporting taxpayers for years.
  • Grow toward owning a service end to end — design, build, ship, support

What we're looking for

  • Bachelors in CS, Engineering, or a related field — or a bootcamp, self-taught path, or career change with work you can show us
  • Some hands-on programming in Java or another object-oriented language: internships, coursework, personal projects, or contributions all count
  • Familiarity with version control and a general sense of how software gets from a laptop to production - we use Gitlab.
  • Curiosity about how things break — especially the ways people might try to break them on purpose
  • Clear writing. A lot of this job is explaining what you found to someone who wasn't there.

Nice to have (genuinely optional)

  • Exposure to Spring Boot, Micronaut, or another JVM framework
  • SQL and relational databases beyond a single semester
  • Any brush with payments or authentication — OAuth, MFA, a payment gateway integration in a side project
  • Cloud platform experience [AWS/Azure/GCP/Kubernetes], even just personal
  • A sense for where AI models help and where they don't

What We Offer

  • Broad, meaningful legal work with real ownership and direct mentorship from experienced in-house counsel.
  • A collaborative, low-ego team and a stable, profitable, growing company.
  • Competitive Pay – Starting salary depends on experience
  • Generous Benefits, Health Insurance, and PTO
  • 4% 401K Match and 401K Profit Sharing Contributions
  • Work-life balance is supported and encouraged
